wavefunction··on New Texas Abortion Law Likely to Unleash a Torrent of Lawsuits Against Education
I believe that's for criminal offenses, which this Texas legislation does not contain. I am not a lawyer, just what I read from actual lawyers. Qui tam lawsuits allow a private citizen to bring suit on behalf of the government but I don't believe this legislation qualifies under those standards.
wavefunction··on How did the plain green lawn become the central landscaping feature in America?
I don't mind plugging mine in (it's corded). I even use it to clean the gutters every fall. Even better than batteries unless you really need that mobility.
wavefunction··on The Australian federal government is planning to de-anonymize the internet
That's rich coming from a HUAC flunky like Ronnie Raygun. He could certainly deliver a line, even if he didn't believe it himself.
wavefunction··on The Australian federal government is planning to de-anonymize the internet
Does it have to be "all?" "All" seems unlikely. "Some" seems very likely.
wavefunction··on The Sackler Family Wins Immunity from Future Opioid Lawsuits
That seems like putting the cart before the horse. Or at least, logically of course the settlement which protects their billions would need to be destroyed.
wavefunction··on Photography technology has influenced what people consider a good picture
For you, perhaps. I don't think there is an objective truth of "this is art, this is not art." I shared my experience of the pictures with you. Art is the experience of Art imo.
wavefunction··on Enterprise Software Projects Killed the Software Developer
I don't agree that Agile requires JIT requirements but benefits from and thus promotes them as the best way to deliver requirements for a feature.

Under waterfall, a document is written by an analyst that describes a problem to be fixed. Six months later, the task is picked up but legal regulations or market conditions or even the rest of the software has changed. However, the Waterfall requirements are the requirements and that's what gets implemented. Best-case scenario is that the business analyst that wrote the original spec is still employed and has been updating the requirements as conditions change.

What we've done at successful agile shops I've been a part of is quarterly planning that collects at a high-level the current requests/needs of the business, prioritizes them, they get a t-shirt size to determine if all of the requests/needs can be met during the quarter and they fall off by priority until you're left with a manageable high-level plan of work for the quarter. Then those high-level requests are decomposed into epics and stories which are specced out and estimated, etc.

It works very well but it requires that people work collaboratively from the executives and business stake-holders to the technical leadership and individual engineers.

wavefunction··on Photography technology has influenced what people consider a good picture
I like them and it's simply because they evoke an intellectual and emotional reaction. That's art.
wavefunction··on Twitter starts to require login to view tweets
Hopefully this will reduce the amount of embedded tweets in articles and my accidental exposure to Twitter and the problems it produces.
wavefunction··on They thought they were going to rehab but ended up in chicken plants (2017)
It's expensive to move to a brand new place and one of the only things many poor people have to rely on is their local network of family and friends.
wavefunction··on Economic costs of war
China can have both, I don't see why having both Afghanistan and the Golden Triangle in your pocket is a bad thing if you're interested in opiate production at the global scale.
wavefunction··on US real estate a safe haven for billions in dirty money, report says
I am unsympathetic to the reaction of Swiss banking officials who are apparently deeply emotionally affected by the imposition to report on the financial assets of wealthy people with financial interests in the US. Switzerland's history of providing financial services to the very worst people in the world is not much of a bush to hide behind.
wavefunction··on Tether minted most USDT to just 2 firms – Alameda and Cumberland
smart contracts are just bits of functional code

I don't know that I'd invest in a deployed smart contract but I suppose it depends on the traffic and the situation of the developer

it wouldn't be hard for the original developer to deploy a competing contract

wavefunction··on $600M taken in largest DeFi hack to date
There are all sorts of people working in this space with a variety of beliefs like any other industry. They're not all crypto-anarcho-capitalists.
wavefunction··on How far could a spaceship go if we never ran out of thrust? (2020)
Forever? Seems self-evident.
wavefunction··on Crows have been shown to understand the concept of zero
I think that's part of it to be sure. However I can readily account nine items versus ten items depending on how they are organized. We are counting when we are enumerating, however that occurs in man, bird or bee it seems to me.
wavefunction··on Crows have been shown to understand the concept of zero
But then what is counting? Is it what we (humans, birds and bees) use to abstract reality?
wavefunction··on Apple gave Uber access to a secret feature that can record iPhone screens (2017)
I guess the argument then is "technical limitations excuse privacy lapses."
wavefunction··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
This reads like a straw man argument.
wavefunction··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
The problem arises when most of them want to attend UT-Austin rather than UT-El Paso or UT-Permian Basin or UT-Rio Grande. And as noted by others the threshold had to be revised downwards from 10%. I personally believe you can receive an excellent education from most institutions but there's prestige associated with UT-Austin that isn't with the satellite campuses.
wavefunction··on Autonomy founder Mike Lynch can be extradited to US
Why not extradite both!
wavefunction··on Voice clone of Anthony Bourdain prompts synthetic media ethics questions
I enjoyed the running gag (based on many episodes) of Bourdain going on a local fishing/hunting trip and failing to catch anything, and then having to scramble to some other local place and make up for the lack of a catch which some times were some of the highlights of the episode. And then on rare occasions when they did catch their prey, it made for a nice juxtaposition.
wavefunction··on Dividend Cripples Saudi Aramco
What would you have preferred, US$0.205 billion every day?
wavefunction··on The Medici as Artists Saw Them
I think a great way to actually induce that behavior is to make digital copies freely available to encourage education about and appreciation of art and artists.
wavefunction··on Reconstructing Roman Industrial Engineering
In early Imperial Rome prestigious families would fund public works as a public symbol of their wealth and power. This shifted over time to a more self-interested display of wealth and power in the family's villas. If the aqueducts and roads have existed for centuries in your region there is less opportunity for those public displays of civil engineering and I would suspect the skills and knowledge did wither though I can't say to what extent. Look how fast the knowledge to build the space-race era rockets was lost in the US, and that's with modern record keeping and no major domestic disasters or upheavals.
wavefunction··on Casa Client Case Study: The Tinder Trap
A little aggravation? lol not in my experience
wavefunction··on Twitter begins hiring to comply with India’s new rules
If the argument is that facebook is too big to be regulated by anyone, even facebook, then it's time to break it down into smaller and more manageable parts.
wavefunction··on Haiti’s President Is Assassinated
I wonder what is owed Haiti for the profits extracted from the enslaved peoples forced to work to death there.
wavefunction··on Psilocybin repairs 'brains cells damaged by depression' in mice: study
They should probably be taking a sub-threshold dose anyways. The effects are the same and there's no risk of strong hallucinations.
wavefunction··on Psilocybin repairs 'brains cells damaged by depression' in mice: study
This seems like something that could be measured with at least one of the scanning techniques we already employ. It seems like an MRI could provide a rough result that could lead to further and more direct testing.
