willcodeforfoo··on Fiverr Raises $30M for Online Services Marketplace
In these cases, I think its less about the cost of the initial design but the hundreds of billions of dollars in marketing and advertising spent since building the value of the mark in our collective conscience.
willcodeforfoo··on OpenRoss – fast, scalable, on-demand image resizer
I just built a very simple version of this in about 100 lines of go, using http://github.com/disintegration/imaging for the image processing.

I was surprised how... latent downloading from S3 is, and how it didn't seem to matter if I was running on Digital Ocean or EC2, downloading the image from S3 was always the slowest part. (Digital Ocean was actually faster!)

It takes about a second to process an image, but it is cached in front of CloudFront similar to the article.

Any tips for improving the latency from S3?

willcodeforfoo··on Show HN: I redesigned the Microsoft employee badge
This makes me think large companies like this should invest just a tad bit more in taking quality photos. Ditch the DMV backdrop, on-camera flash and low quality photo and invest in a couple umbrellas and just an entry-level dSLR. As often as they are seen, you should make people feel good about it.
willcodeforfoo··on We made something. We use it. We love it. Apple rejected it
I had an idea like this once: http://lifemetric.com/

I always wanted to make an app for it, but it looks like yours is pretty nice. Just add some more features and Apple will probably accept it.

willcodeforfoo··on Elasticsearch 1.0.0 released
Congrats! Elasticsearch is one of my favorite recent pieces of technology.
willcodeforfoo··on Show HN: Dynosaur, An autoscaler for Heroku using Google Analytics Live
It's kind of surprising that Heroku hasn't cracked this nut on their own. Perhaps it isn't in their best interest to scale down? Scalability certainly is often touted as one of the benefits of "the cloud".
willcodeforfoo··on Manta: Unix Meets Map Reduce
Interesting, is Manta open source?
willcodeforfoo··on How to implement an algorithm from a scientific paper
I'm a little ignorant on the topic, what legal rights do I have to use a (self)implemented academic paper?
willcodeforfoo··on Adobe is offering many of their CS2 software for free for PC and Mac.
May be a fair concern, I'm getting a "We're sorry, the site area you've requested is unavailable. Please try again later." error page now.
willcodeforfoo··on Show HN: My weekend project on curating relevant deals
Reminds me a bit of SpeakerDeck...
willcodeforfoo··on Python for Humans
It is Monofur: http://www.dafont.com/monofur.font, IMO it looks better on slides in small doses than in an editor all day long.
willcodeforfoo··on HTML Canvas Deep dive book open sourced
Awesome, the draggable value sliders (that even work on the iPad) are a nice touch and really help you make a visual connection to the values and what they do.
willcodeforfoo··on Underrated Features of PostgreSQL
Sequel Pro is awesome... I think they are working toward offering Postgres support: http://code.google.com/p/sequel-pro/issues/detail?id=362 but haven't seen anything concrete yet.

I just learned SP has bundles, like TextMate. Nifty.

willcodeforfoo··on How Github uses Github to build Github
I believe it reads MAC addresses of connected machines to the wireless router.
willcodeforfoo··on Show HN: My WWDC-inspired project. A Markdown editor for Lion
Wow, all gone in less than 14 minutes! Oh well.

This kind of reminds me of http://www.iawriter.com/

willcodeforfoo··on JRuby 1.6.0 Released: Now with Ruby 1.9.2 Support
I've heard this argument a few times. As someone that's not new to Ruby but hasn't touched Java, can you elaborate as to what these awesome Java libraries are?
willcodeforfoo··on A 'lorem ipsum' for images.
How about allowing named arguments for common sizes, like IAB (http://www.iab.net/iab_products_and_industry_services/1421/1...) or common display sizes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Vector_Video_Standards2.sv...)? So you could do, http://dummyimage.com/skyscraper instead of http://dummyimage.com/120x600
willcodeforfoo··on A 'lorem ipsum' for images.
I love the simplicity of this, a good reminder why Ruby is so awesome.
willcodeforfoo··on Ask HN: Please, review wordoid.com, a smart naming webapp
Anxious to try this out. I just get a blank list of numbers in Safari, Firefox, and Chrome on Mac. Firebug tells me you're making an Ajax request once a second, seems... odd?

Clicking Go! seems to do nothing.
