xxcode··on Any stories of employees with equity successfully taking home over $1m? $500k?
yes - I was part of a recent acquisition and made a little over 4M (pretax). I had 0.1% of the company. I was 24th employee (engineer). The company had 55 people at the time of acquisition. I joined about 14 months before the acquisition.
xxcode··on Too Much Calculus – Gilbert Strang (2001) [pdf]
I took Gilbert Strang's Mathematical Methods for Engineers course at MIT. Can't seem to find the link for it, but I would recommend the online version for anyone who wants to learn linear algebra.
xxcode··on A Tiny Minority of Elite Grad Schools Produce Most Tenured Academics
I was surprised when I found out that there were faculty candidates from University of Washington at both Berkeley and Stanford.

This is amazing, and shows that Tier 2 schools can send students to become profs at the 'top 4'

xxcode··on Looking for Tech Co Founder East Bay CA
How do I contact you?
xxcode··on Job brokers steal wages and entrap Indian tech workers in US
I am not sure if your response is relevant to the article, but I felt that there is some level of superiority complex that you and many fellow humans posses (in this case, about your superior knowledge and intellect).

Perhaps the biggest difference between you and someone applying for the job through the h1b visa program was that they were born in a different set of circumstances than you were. They were likely born in India whereas you were born I the United States. As a result of being born in India, they went to a local school there which didn't teach them about hash tables and concurrency. Your school did, and you had a better education. This person from India is trying to make a better life for himself despite starting at a disadvantage in life(being born in a poor country with access to lesser educational opportunities than you). You are welcome to reject him for the job(you can do so at the resume screening state, especially if they don't have the relevant skills and experience) but I think it would be useful to remember that the other person is a human, likely disadvantaged, and express some human empathy.

xxcode··on Is Instacart deceptive?
Wow! I always suspected this. Thank you for the detailed analysis.

This makes me question Instacard.

xxcode··on On becoming an expert C programmer
The article advises learning to play music because a lot of good programmers play music. A lot of programmers are also white. Please become white if you can.
xxcode··on MIT computer scientists can predict the price of Bitcoin
SLIPPAGE SLIPPAGE SLIPPAGE!!!
xxcode··on Spark Breaks Previous Large-Scale Sort Record
Does this mean that Spark is the new God. If this is the case, then Databricks will be the next Cloudera. Cloudera is probably a 10B+ company.

Good job

xxcode··on Looks by Dr. Dre
I have experience in getting high-end plastic boxes manufactured (some in US, and increasingly in China because of price dynamics). Believe me, it is not a big deal. The variations are all commodity - you may have to get different molds made and finish made, but they will work will all different types of plastics. The plastics are already colored when in the pellet form (i.e., you dont paint on them) so colors variations are trivial to achieve.
xxcode··on Alan Kay at Demo: The Future Doesn't Have to Be Incremental
Hacker News is the epitome of short term thinking, with projects like 'weekend projects' etc.
xxcode··on Ask HN: MIT, Harvard, or Stanford?
If you are not sure about MIT, don't go to MIT. Thats one thought I heard around campus at MIT.

It will be a good journey. Try to get laid.

xxcode··on Introducing the Priceonomics Business Model: Data Crawling Services
Basically, you seem to be going the LifeStyle Business route. Good for you!!!
xxcode··on Why Google Went Offline Today and a Bit about How the Internet Works
To be accurate, google didn't go down today -- your pathway from your computer to google got 'poisoned'. It wasn't Google's fault.
xxcode··on Has Apple Peaked?
Apple will never be able to match Google in Maps. Here's why:

Apple does not have any technical depth.

I am a former Apple employee. Apple can't do technically hard problems that require a multi-person effort. Yes, Apple can and has done good Hardware. But hardware is not technically hard - its an art. Apple is good at Art. Google is good at science.

xxcode··on Give people an iPhone 4S, tell them it's an iPhone 5
This discussion has been highlacked by morons talking about the cases.

The main point is - Apple's marketing is so good that people suspend judgement.

xxcode··on Starbucks Chooses Square for Payments
btw, not that it matters, but Seattle Best Coffee is owned by Starbucks.
xxcode··on Show HN: A better way to track fitness goals (my nights and weekend project)
Its pretty awesome that a product manager wrote code and made shit happen.
xxcode··on Yammer agrees to Microsoft's $1 billion acquisition offer
Yammer says we are their 'top ten' users. We are a 8K employee software company.

Most common comment about yammer - "Oh I've used it....once".

xxcode··on Dropbox let scandinavia down for 3 hours
I think Google Drive is less likely to ever go down like this. Its google, they know their shit.
xxcode··on "That's Why You Don't Have Any Friends."
Never till I went to MIT did I not feel that I was weird. At MIT, it felt ok to be me. I was like that, and others were kinda like that, and we were good together.
xxcode··on U.S. Files Antitrust Lawsuit Against Apple, Hachette
I am happy that they did. More competition, cheaper eBooks are good for everyone in the long run.
xxcode··on Don't sell Technology to Indian Businesses
The article was a bit difficult to follow, perhaps due to liberal use of 'Indian' English and missing prepositions. Sorry, I know this is meta - I would like to hear what you have to say and would likely find it interesting. I would appreciate if you were to revise your writing so that it is more readable. I believe you are capable of it.
xxcode··on Ramos alarm clock
Kickstarter - such a good way to corner all the dumb money.
xxcode··on Honest People Might Be Dangerous
You have to be honest because you want to be. Because you dont want to project what you're not, and because you dont want to remember for the rest of the life the lie you said in order to be consistent.

Honesty is for yourself, and not for other people. In my opinion, it was right that you said the truth, and that you failed. You should argue that you shouldn't have failed, not that you dont need to tell the truth.

IMHO, and probably the contrarian view. But the contrarian view is of value because it makes you think. Please think of that before you downvote/upvote the comment.

xxcode··on Stripe Blog: Track Stripe's uptime
Why is this important? Why are you telling this to people? Why is this news that a Hacker should know.

I might not get it, but IMHO if its not something of general interest, it shouldn't be on HN (even though the company might be PG's portfolio).

xxcode··on Why have CPUs been limited in frequency to around 3.5Ghz for so many years?
High(er) Frequency means that you have to run at a higher core voltage (this is, in part, because gate propagation delay is inversely proportional to bias voltage, i.e., the voltage corresponding to a 'high' or 1 bit). You have to decrease the propagation delay so that the clock tick gets everywhere in the processor quickly (one part of the clock doesn't lag the other parts, called clock skew). So in order for things to run faster, you'd have to run it at a higher V(bias). Now that means that there are higher thermal costs (things get hotter) - heat produced is proportion to voltage.

So its now mostly a thermal management problem. This is the primary problem in the newer chips. Even though we can pack in more transistors, we can't get signals among them faster without higher V and making it run too hot.

Therefore, our solution is to use the extra transistors to create a separate new processor, running with a different clock, so the 'tick' doesn't have to reach all parts of this rather big chip, but just needs to be synchronized intra-core.

xxcode··on Why I Will Never Feel Threatened by Programmers in India
With all due respect, there is no reason that folks in India will not learn the same stuff the author learnt. They would (and probably are) on hacker news - learning the same subset of things.

And, they live in a country where $2 still buys you a decent meal. I don't see why they wont be able to do a good job, for less.

xxcode··on John McCarthy Has Died
I got a call this morning from his daughter that he has died this morning. Sorry to have him go.
xxcode··on Apple Has 1,000 Engineers Working On Chips For The Post-PC Era
the text of the article doesn't seem to explain how the assertion is made. Until last year (when I left apple), the PA Semi team (which is the A4/A5 team) was about 20 people (and they were hiring 3-4 more), so this is somewhat difficult to believe, but I might have outdated information. The designs are mostly modified arm designs.
