The steeper the better, so you dont waste time coasting or softpedaling or lose velocity to air losses. Steepness is also good for the descent, getting you up to a good (terminal) velocity.

It also helps if the segment is straight such that you dont need to corner.

IIRC the ones who were competing for the record didnt make the effort/recovery trade off consideration, their limiter was the segment.

I dont think they've found a longer perfect segment yet apart from the one in GB.

But from what I#ve seen the optimal ratio was 3-4/1 asc./desc.

should have paid a little bit more for hosting then

People said the same about mobile gaming and look where we are.

PC Gaming is a big initial investment for some people so making it more accesible will maybe also attract some of the mobile market who want to play AAA titles but dont want a console or a PC.

That being said I dont think we'll be saying goodbye to the desktop gaming PC anytime soon.

zython··on Heatsink Skiving (2021) [video]
Me too I was at the edge of my seat waiting for the heatsink to be thrown out of a plane.
zython··on Ask HN: Why is building Windows apps so complicated?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivorship_bias

You are less likely to read the truly unpopular opinions but yes I agree, seems like a cheap way to gain popularity.

zython··on Why does iPhone 13 screen replacement disable Face ID
I can see how this can be a safety issue but IIRC even with genuine apple parts faceID stops working :/

so this only concerns 3rd party repair shops or individuals who dont want to pay apple to replace their screen.

zython··on Who won the Amstel Gold Race? Human error in photo-finishes
In cycling you dont race the parcours you race your opponent, so the winner will do just as much work as is needed to beat his opponent.

or as already mentioned the title is wrong.

zython··on Media files extracted from North Korea's Red Star OS
I hope the author has removed all meta-data or otherwise reencoded the images such that no traceback is possible to the source to the OS.

There was a talk [1] that IIRC mentioned that some userid is "baked" into the OS and its apps and can potentially be traced back to an individual.

zython··on Thonny: A hassle-free Python micro-IDE
Who is this made for ? I'm not hating but genuinely curious.
zython··on FAA issuing new rules to allow drones to fly over people and at night
Thats exacly my point; when the police is under increased public scrutiny this type of dodgy shit gets offloaded to the private sector with little to none public interest of oversight.
zython··on FAA issuing new rules to allow drones to fly over people and at night
Anyone want to bet in what capacity this will be used for (police) surveillance ? Especially since Alphabet and Amazon are involved.
zython··on Megadesk
Can this be used to prank certain tall, beet farming, mustard yellow shirt wearing co workers at a midsized paper company ?
zython··on Pitch Drop Experiment
GWR has recently shifted its business to consulting companies countries and other entities with image problems.

They hand out records to them and make a show and everything, as to "record-wash" their image.

You're damn right GWR is a scam

zython··on Ask HN: Is it just me or did Google search recently get a lot worse?
I had a similar experience with youtube lately: I was looking for a song that I knew the tune and a related artist and for the love of god could not find it with the current youtube recommendations. Most of the videos I'd get recommended when searching related songs, were not even music-related. So I went to archive.org and within a couple of results found what I was looking for.

Youtube's recommendation has really changed for the worse.

zython··on The $0.006 Object in a Sushi Container
How's that infantile ?

As far as I can see all the people are more or less drawn anatomically correct and IMO it looks good.

Have you ever seen something drawn by an infant ?

zython··on Fleets of drones could aid searches for lost hikers
Yeah, nah. Its only a matter of time when "find and rescue" becomes "search and destroy".

Not to cheapen the work the authors have done, but I dont have a lot of faith that this tech will be used for "good".

zython··on Ask HN: Best robust laptop for everyday software development
How many hours of real world use do you get? I've been meaning to upgrade from a 440s and want to know how the battery performs on the newer models.
zython··on Python in Visual Studio Code

Also hetzner cloud

I dont know about the cores that hetzner provides and how they compare to the competitors, but ~3$ for a somewhat usable VPS is damn competetive

(not affiliated with hetzner in any way, other than I have one of those 3$ instances)

zython··on Gear Review: Wahoo Elemnt Bolt
Battery life mostly.

I've used the device for 4 hours this week and the battery dipped from ~50% to ~40% (that is witout backlight and other variables which might consumer more energy)

I believe they are also weather proof (mine didnt mind some water splashed onto it).

A Dynamo to power my phone would unnessecarily add another drag coefficient and slow me down.

It is also claimed that the device is more aerodynamic than the competing devices from GARMIN and also a phone based solution.

The device also has some very nice LED indicators for metrics like heart-rate (blue when resting, green in sweetspot, orange/red when burning matches and dipping into non-aerobic zone).

I could go on but this list covers most of the reasons I bought the unit.

zython··on Ask HN: What are the things keep in mind while giving/preparing for a tech talk?
>Always do at least 1 full rehearsal with a timer, preferably two full rehearsals where the first one you do keep a timer but also have a notebook (physical) present to quickly write down adjustments you want to make.

two are still too few IMO (I'm not a native speaker but still). I like to do at least ~5, where I can get a feel for the sentences I'll pick for transitions (like some sort of theater play) so should I get stuck somewhere I know how to transition to the next talking point/topic.

>Do not use a linux machine,

eh, my experience with linux machines was mostly positive, what I can recommend though is to have the slides ready (4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio) in the cloud as a "safety net"
