zython··on Sugar-sweetened drinks with protein rich meal affect metabolism
Lately I've been having this feeling that the pseudo science of nutrition (not talking about the researchers but the food and lifestyle artists on social media) makes it very hard to find out what a good diet is and what isnt.

Meat ? Bad unless it isnt. Dairy and Eggs ? Even worse except when it isnt. Vegan/vegetarian nutrition ? The worst except, you guessed it, when it isnt.

If you dont believe me just google any food and try to find out a general consensus about it. A lot of these sites talk about facts without sources, use terms like "toxins" without going into detail about what exactly they are etc.pp.

Thoughts ?

zython··on How I found an exploit in a Paypal vendor ticket server
Awesome find and excellent writeup.

But I have to say that I find those flashy gifs and memes a little bit distracting.

zython··on China forces one of its Muslim minorities to install spyware on their phones
>The app reportedly scans for the MD5 digital signatures of media files in the phone, and matches them to a stored database of offending files classified by the government as illegal "terrorist-related" media.

What a dumb way to scan for "illegal" content, considering the goverment already controls their portion of the internet. So instead of monitoring who is accessing what they decide to compare checksums of files which can be trivially changed which would result in a completely new hash value.

Seems like a very incompetent way of doing this.

zython··on Ask HN: How do you invite contributors to contribute on your project?
Before everyone starts posting her/his own projects in this thread I'd like to pitch my idea to what I personally am looking in this situation: a board similar to https://starters.servo.org/ for open source project where I can learn a new language by fixing bugs/resolving issues that can be ranked from beginner to expert, so you can find interesting projects fix bugs and learn new languages at once.

The link I have posted only covers the mozilla servo project and I can see this concept working with multiple projects/languages/etc.

Of course one would need to heavily moderate the submissions but I think this idea is great. Anyone know if something like this exists ?

zython··on Trying Soylent didn’t go well
radically changing your diet to a controversial product can lead to unfavourable consequences, who'd've thunk ?
zython··on Show HN: Insect – a high-precision scientific calculator with physical units
hmmm, I'm a little bit skeptical about this.

I'd be cool to have this as a python script somewhere but I am not quite sure wether I would visit this site whenever I need to calculate some physical units, especially since google already covers most of my needs

dont get me wrong, I think otherwise it looks and feels great and is easy to use but I dont know who will use this.

zython··on Soylent Closes $50M Series B Round Led by GV
Interesting thought, but if I may ask, can you really blame Soylent for that?

The only person that I know drinks soylent only to surpess the hunger until lunch, and doesnt plan on drinking only soylent. So far they say its doing its job good enough.

What's your opinion on that ?

zython··on “Ghost in the Shell - Remake”
Loved the sountrack. Cant wait for the sequel
zython··on Iaito – A Qt and C++ GUI for radare2 reverse engineering framework
that looks really good, I am really looking forward to using this

i think radare has scared a lot of re beginners because the UI was not very intuitive, i'd love to see that change

zython··on Show HN: A Pomodoro app for your menubar/tray
I cannot get behind the idea that I need 173 mb in libraries and module for what is essentially a simplistic timer, but it looks nice and works on linux (at least on my machien and from the screenshot it looks like it works on windows aswell), so I have mixed feelings about this app.
zython··on Reddit is being manipulated by big financial services companies
I think it goes without saying that a social media site with millions of users and place 23 on the Alexa rankings is an interesting advertising platform, and that it happens on a regular basis and a large distributed scale across the platform.

The far more important problem in my opinion in this situation is to be able to differentiate a "normal" user submitted post from an advertisiement, a skill that is missing in 80% of today's youth:

zython··on Show HN: DeepUI Programming Studio – A different approach to programming
I think they pursue a similar approach to programming or implementing programming logic as DRAKON.

If you believe their website it has been used in the Russian Space Program.

But I have to agree with you, this DeepUI looks a PITA to work with in comparison to DRAKON.

zython··on Htop Explained Visually
such a great tool, so easy to use, much better than top, though that is my own opinion
zython··on Cryptkeeper sets the same password “p” independently of user input
CLI- as opposed to what ? What other option is there that is easier and safer to implement ?
zython··on Show HN: Feedback required for Side project
What do you want feedback on ? The site looks nice, havent made an account yet, as I dont have the need for a service like this, but I mean if it works, I can see it being successful.
zython··on New Study Finds Performance-Enhancing Drugs for Chess
How did you hear about these substances and what conviced you to swallow 4(!) pills a day with our national drug caffeine ?
zython··on I Am a Recruiter (a.k.a Spammer) at Amazon
What is the problem exactly ?

Dont want to recieve emails ? Filter them out.

Dont want to be hired by Amazon, send a restraining order and what not, contact their HR directly, or what not but ranting on medium will not solve the authors problem.

This makes me question if the author is secretly just clickbaiting for attention

zython··on Google planning to bring AI and ML tools to Raspberry Pi
Kind of an misleading title, nothing is release per se yet.

They've just announced that they might release something ML/AI related in 2017 for the PI.

zython··on [dead]
The last time I remember SO being down, it was because someone entered a unhealthy amount of whitespace somewhere. I'm curios what caused it this time.

Aaaaand it up again for me.

zython··on BitTorrent vs. HTTP
Makes me even happier to use Linux almost exclusively now.
zython··on BitTorrent vs. HTTP
Yeah, thats cool but I dont want to pay to be a part of Microsoft's/Apple's/ you-name-it's insfrastructure.

I dont want to be (potentiall forced to) distribute software.

With recent developments in net neutrality and data plans, p2p could drastically impact my data plan and cost me money.

Sure I can see why you would think the potential is, but for me p2p data distribution is out of the question, at least for now.

zython··on A Story of a Fraudulent Coder
His honest opinion would have costed him no time or effort, and would have saved him an angry rant on medium.

Harshly put: shame on the author to complain on medium when he perfectly knew that this guy was going to fail.

zython··on A Story of a Fraudulent Coder
I don't feel sorry for anyone involved.

First the guy had it coming anyway and should have seen it coming, that his disqualification would be hidden forever.

If the company had a live coding interview, his incompetence would have stood out immediately, if he couldnt come up with a FizzBuzz in his own free time

Also, the author acted negligent to his friend if he knowingly let him go into that mess without warning him about the consequences.

Maybe I'm interpreting the term friend wrong but the author should have warned him anyway that he is not ready, given what he'd known about the guy.

zython··on Ask HN: How do you deal with cold fingertips when you code?
stand up, walk around for a bit, make some tea
zython··on TV anchor says live on-air ‘Alexa, order me a dollhouse’
I wouldnt phrase it that way. But it is very badly designed that the voice command purchasing is enabled by default, and should be changed that when set up it has to be explicitly activated.
zython··on AMD Gives More Zen Details
Is there a MSRP for the RYZEN flagship that they showed off today yet, because I havent seen one.

But as long as it stays under the $1100 of the 6900K I think they can secure the mid to high-end enthusiast grade market which is good because I am tired of intel controlling that portion of the market

zython··on Google is not just a platform – It frames, shapes and distorts how we see
shame on you for putting that clickbait title, for a split second I actually thought that google's algorithm was broken
zython··on Toy decompiler for x86-64 written in Python [pdf]
86 upvotes over 9 hours and no comments yet, maybe I'll post the first one.

I must say that I enjoyed the read, but the introduction was a little bit too short for my taste. Opinions ?

zython··on Htop explained
love it, good overview over all functionalities of htop and easy to follow

Good job.

zython··on Buttery Smooth Emacs
