I am quite happy with The Great Suspender for automatically suspending tabs - has a good range of options for tweaking.

The OneTab extension can also be used to convert all your hoarded tabs into a list, saving you memory and CPU.

The Great Suspender is indeed great. I also like to use Session Buddy so I can preserve groups of hoarded tabs without actually having them open.

One of the most useful extensions I have. Highly recommended.
