The US has a nascent but extremely scary monolithic, fundamentalist belief system surrounding "new liberal" ideologies.
Try arguing immigration policy, environmental policy, basic income, minimum wages or any other liberal position on purely economic grounds and you will swiftly be labeled a racist or a fascist and sent into ideological exile. Whatever logic one brings to bear will be irrelevant. Non-conforming positions are "evil". The round peg of logic must be made to fit the square hole of the ideological narrative.
The US has long past the era of open debate, and has entered an era of authoritarian thought-control.
