I think given the high stakes of killing yourself or other people, we should be brutally unforgiving in highlighting major failures of killer technology.

... I doubt it would help highlight the need for security. On a more general level, I personally don't think it's worth to trade reputation for attention via clickbait. But it might be the better option, I honestly don't know.
Imagine BuzzFeed would start to warn about a serious issue - sure, they get the attention, but with their reputation is going to be hard to get people to take their point seriously. And I hate to see ArsTechnica going in this direction.
