Fundamentally this is an education problem and the leaders of Western society in their desire for for votes pander to unscientific, uneducated but popular freaking memes, for god's sake. And this behaviour is mimicked by the populace they lead. It's a downward spiral that may have more momentum than humanity has the willpower to resist.

Yes, there is a lack of sympathy for a group who chooses this for themselves and their communities for no reason beyond their own ignorance and ego.
