It actually does nowadays. The --platform flag integrates with QEMU. It's emulation so it's slower, but better than doing it manually.

Either QEMU itself or the QEMU integration seems a bit buggy to me coz it goes wrong a lot.

I use QEMU on a regular basis and have hardly ever have issues so I'd guess it's the integration piece.
