What makes you think there are no influential artists on social media?

Even if you want to discount taylor swift for whatever reason, there are huge numbers of artists on social media.

The proportion of those who are traditional oil on canvas painters (insofar as much as Frida Kahlo was traditional) is probably tiny, but, that reflects the fact that the proportion of artists who are traditional is tiny and I would suspect they skew against social media.

Just off the top of my head one of my favorite X-nee-twitter accounts I follow is https://twitter.com/straczynski who is incredibly directly engaged with fans (and sometimes hilariously confused people https://twitter.com/straczynski/status/1794874375101194421) and is absolutely an influential artist by any definition of the word I would agree with.

I think this is a good point. It might be because artists typically reject mainstream culture or that they distance themselves from it in order to comment on it.
