Humans have eaten insects for as long as there have been humans. No one's expected to eat them, they are just approved for eating under food regulations in the EU now. It's highly unlikely they'll ever stop labeling them properly because insects can cause the exact same allergic reaction that shellfish do, given how similar they are to each other.

Fun fact: shellac has been in food for a while, especially those shiny chocolates.

And you've got carmine as well - we've been eating bugs all along!

Civilization, first in the form of religions, has established all sort of rules against practices of primitive tribes that were guided by necessity.

We are now throwing overboard humanism and start to make lives worse for the masses while the 1% who live in castles in Tuscany can buy their organic food locally.

Yikes, dawg. Chapulines are delicious.

I do not mind harvesting if it consensual, or from dead body.

But there is a cosmetic treatment that takes stem cells from new borns foreskin. What sort of twisted mind tortures and maims babies, just after birth, so they can look younger!!!

Do you feel like you had to create an alt because the globalists are going to delete this? And you didn't want said globalists to interfere with your primary account?

Do you feel like mocking people who criticize WEF policies even after they have actually become law is still a valid strategy in 2025?

On the other hand, perhaps you are using reverse psychology to support MEGA.

Do you feel like you're actually contributing to a conversation, or being a member-in-good-faith of a community if you have to create new accounts to hide what you're saying?

There are other comments in this thread from throwaway accounts created very recently. It's the first time that I see something like that here on HN.

Ha, open your eyes then, throw-away accounts have been super common here for a very very long time (at least a decade).

It's plainly obvious what's going on, and what the near future of HN is if dang and co don't change things.

Oh man, I hate to break it to you, but Americans can choose to eat bugs too!

Whats wrong with eating bugs?

People have evolved a natural protective feeling of disgust when confronted with the possibility of eating insects and worms. Try cultivating 100 mealworms, smell them and then put them in your mouth.

Slogans cannot overcome this feeling, that is why they are sold in the form of powders or stealthily added to food.

But I get that these powders are a great startup idea that requires no intellect, only advertising ("this is actually a good thing") and lobbying for dropping regulations.

I mean, put some live shrimp on a plate and I'm sure people will not feel great about it either.

People have eaten bugs around the world forever, from prehistory to modern times.

Scorpions, snails, ants, silkworms, grasshoppers, bees, and yes, mealworms, all have long long long histories of being a part of human diets. See also Carmine and shellac.

You live a sheltered life that hasn't been exposed to this extremely normal phenomena.

I suppose the "sell powder lobby" on HN does not like this post. Vance's friends must be happy with this EU regulation.
