I don't think we should assume that there is a universal law of gravity that will automatically swing this pendulum in other direction.

I'm not aware of any historical counterexamples, but I'd love to learn if you have any.

It's called the survivorship bias. But you can go ahead and ask all the dead liberals in Chile if you want confirmation of that.
