Those projects come with existing culture and ways of working which isn't compatible with how to do things with AI.

Forks don’t.

But think of the hype though. "Vibe-coded fork of Gimp with UI and UX equivalence to Photoshop" may hit the HN frontpage, but not media outlets.

LLMs have already ingested that code as training data.

My guess is that the AI companys already decompiled any binary that makes money internally - and used the source as training data.
