You just buy an Apple product and they send you a fake. They commingle counterfeit stuff with legit products (at least they used to) so it was luck of the draw.

But what seller even does this? If I search any Apple product, the sellers are Apple or Amazon Renewed. The Apple ones are definitely Apple themselves. The renewed mention some other name under "shipped/sold by," so maybe those can be fake?

Amazon does (or did[0]) the commingling, not the seller. Wild practice, really.

All product is sent to Amazon warehouses from all sellers. It’s how Amazon has such fast shipping. And all product of the same type from all sellers is commingled. So you never know what you’re going to get.
