It's from a PIE root and found in one form or another in most European languages.

And interestingly it's often related to circle and bread in many languages:

Pi, Pie, Pide, Pita, Pizza, Piadina, Pirog (Russian for "pie"), Piscina (circular basin), Pipe.

Also, some Russian words for organs that have to do with piss (which are naturally circular) also start with "Pi".

"PIE" in this sense being an abbreviation for "Proto Indo-European".

Missed that, but so apt anyway!
