I guess it never occurred to you that the "why" doesn't matter here.

Tons of people avoid buying certain consumer products because there is a camera/mic in it, even if it's not always on/can be turned off etc.

The fact password scanning is out of its scope and the potential that it can do harm are enough to drive people away.
