The Russian spy gave access to the GROe server, where a copy of the contents lived. Later on, in the beginning of 2018, the MIVD got direct access to the phone.

Cue the tariffs, sure. But I'm curious about the part verdverm mentions, where the Dutch got a copy of the phone's contents from a Russian spy. How does that even work? I'd guess someone got paid a lot.

It's roughly the same way that Russian grey zone warfare works in Europe: hire a disposable asset and pay them to commit arson and other forms of sabotage. Disloyalty is well trodden ground for the Russians.
