Yeah. My father, born in 1940, was an agricultural engineer in a state farm throughout the communist period in Romania. He was born in a mountain village in the Carpathians and told me when he was a kid, the wheat they grew was tall, a man's height, far taller than the varieties they adopted for intensive farming. Also told me the yield was much lower, although the "mountain wheat" was more resistant to disease and weather conditions.
Generally, the yield of old wheat varieties was nothing compared to modern versions, required to feed today's population.
