Wait until you hear about shinty.

Have you ever seen ice hockey? Okay well imagine that if it was on a field and if you made it into a really fast and violent contact sport.

I'm interested and after work will look for video to better understand game action. But there's no way that shinty is "really fast" compared to ice hockey. Ice hockey players routinely move 15-20mph (~24-32km/h) and occasionally sprint upwards of 25mph (40km/h).

Yeah, they just scoot about on the ice and don't actually play.

Ice hockey is a really boring sport.

Field hockey, yeah, I've heard of it. And there's no way a field hockey player is going to run as fast as an ice hockey player skates.

No, field hockey is a totally different thing. Like ice hockey, field hockey is non-contact, and very slow, and you're not allowed to lift your stick off the surface.

Ice hockey is a full-contact sport so I don't know what sport you think it is.

To follow up, my guess is that it's "Bandy" which is a predecessor of ice hockey with sticks and skates, sometimes called ice hockey, but with a much larger rink and less contact:

Ice hockey is generally used to mean the specific Olympic sport invented in Canada and played professionally in the NHL at the same level as the NFL.

No, it really isn't. You're not allowed hit other players.

In shinty a perfectly acceptable tackle is to hook someone's legs out from under them and then hit them as they go over to make sure they stay down for a bit.

Uh, what? Do you know what a body check is ?

You've never actually watched an ice hockey game, have you?

Reads to me like a typo. They likely meant “unlike”

I have. It's pretty mild stuff.
