There's also "residential data center" proxies you can buy, it sound weird but it's ISPs selling some of their regular residential IP space to proxy companies so they don't look like data center IPs.

Resproxy SDKs. Proton VPN IP addresses are shared across many users. If any user has a Resproxy SDK installed on one of their devices through one of many apps, then that IP address will be used in a Resproxy pool.

I ran some (very) quick tests. Around 18k Proton IPs, we recognize that 61% of the IPs are being used in a residential proxy service.

It sounds like they paid for proxy services, and phoned home using them, in order to learn from which IPs their requests were proxies through.

ASN lookups are so easy...Therefore, detecting VPNs are. Residentials proxies are hard, mobile proxies are harder.
