No, it's pretty sane. I work at a well-known NAS storage-appliance vendor and we're doing something quite similar in-kernel as a caching layer for our filesystem.
When I said "insane", I meant more "this is not something you would expect or that is immediately obvious". My phrasing wasn't the finest.
