07d046··on We’ve only scratched the surface of how bad the crypto crime wave has gotten
This sounds like the same level of understanding about copyright law that led one NFT group to spend $3m on a rare Dune art book thinking it would give them the IP rights to the art.
07d046··on Murder-Suicides by Pilots Are Vexing Airlines as Deaths Mount
The WSJ reported US officials saying it looked intentional based on black box data. The main alternative theory was that someone who wasn't a pilot deliberately did it.

07d046··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
Unfortunately not. The majority of countries have signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions, but this doesn't include Russia, or Ukraine, or the US.

07d046··on Belarus referendum approves proposal to renounce non-nuclear status
True, but that's why I said "stated reason". Here's the full speech: https://theprint.in/world/modern-ukraine-entirely-created-by...
07d046··on Belarus referendum approves proposal to renounce non-nuclear status
Ironically, one of Putin's stated reasons for invading Ukraine was that Ukraine might get nuclear weapons.
07d046··on Dmitri Alperovitc: “Putin speech is over. Chilling. War has begun”
Awful.

A lot of people in threads a few days ago like https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30335610 and https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30405782 were terribly wrong. This wasn't just Russia's annual war games in the region. This wasn't the US and media pushing for a war. If anything, this was the US declassifying things in real time to tell the world what was happening to prevent war.

07d046··on The fastest GIF does not exist
It's in the Windows 2000 leak.
07d046··on Cuffed – A dating app with only one match at a time
Ironically, if I had to guess based on the name of this app, I'd have guessed it was a kink-themed dating app.
07d046··on Off the Grid
In their "basic medicine kit": Oxycodone/acetaminophen (severe, short term pain)

Paracetamol isn't normally an alternative for oxycodone. Also, if travelling internationally, I'm pretty sure there are countries that will consider oxycodone as equivalent to heroin even if you have a prescription.

07d046··on Primel – guess a 5 digit prime number – each guess must be a prime
It seems a lot of us came up with 12347 for the first line.
07d046··on Primel – guess a 5 digit prime number – each guess must be a prime
I thought coming up with primes would be very challenging, but then my first three guesses were all prime (all I did was pick numbers that ended with odd numbers that weren't five). I got it on the fourth after a few attempts at entering the number - the prime constraint here makes it easier.

There are 8,363 five digit primes. If you limit your guesses to numbers ending in 1, 3, 7, and 9, there is a 23% chance of randomly picking a prime.

07d046··on EV startup Rivian announces $2.5B funding round led by Amazon, Ford
> I think the reason you see so many EV announcements from Ford (and GM and Honda and Mercedes and...) in 2021 is because they all suddenly realized they need to press a panic button.

Alternatively, maybe because the traditional manufacturers timed the critical point where it made economic sense to focus on electric cars in the same way?

07d046··on Apple’s new keyboard feature in iOS 15 is insult to Cantonese speaking community
As far as I know, there is a gradual trend to push Mandarin at the expense of Cantonese, and there is reason for concern, but I doubt there's a connection between this and Apple's decision here. (There's a reason I said "crudely".)
07d046··on Apple’s new keyboard feature in iOS 15 is insult to Cantonese speaking community
I doubt this is the case here. Cantonese is an official language of Hong Kong and Macau and the mother tongue of tens of millions in Guangdong. Language politics is complicated but I don't think the CCP is so crudely trying to eliminate languages. Apple also has keyboards for Uyghur and Tibetan, which are probably more sensitive languages.
07d046··on The Bombard Story
Not just ocean water. From Wikipedia:

> However, it appears that Bombard may have been misunderstood in regard to the possibility of survival without fresh water. Bombard has never argued that human survival is possible only by drinking seawater. On the contrary, he indicates that seawater in small quantities can prolong survival if accompanied, if rainwater is not available, by the absorption of liquids present in the bodies of fish.

07d046··on Show HN: I Made JavaScript Color Conversion Library for LCH/Lab/XYZ/RGB/Hex/HSL
I don't know why it should be tiny, given what it's trying to do. Multiple kilobytes are dedicated to CSS color names and ColorBrewer scales, which don't compress well.

At the end of the source there's a section where you can comment out lines which should remove sections of the code when compressing it.

07d046··on Mapping Coronavirus, Responsibly
Indeed, it is not off topic when the topic is "Mapping Coronavirus, Responsibly."

One practical implication of grouping Taiwan with China is that Italy banned travel from Taiwan along with China, even though the situation in Taiwan is basically fine.

It's also not plausible that the author, a professional cartographer, just made a mistake about Taiwan.

07d046··on U.S. Officials Say Huawei Can Covertly Access Telecom Networks
The scary thing about this attitude is that if it's widely adopted and results in Huawei being welcomed (or something that facilities spying), it puts the people who do push back against the Chinese government in the crosshairs.

07d046··on Life and Death in a Wuhan Coronavirus ICU
Caixin is the best Chinese news source in normal times, and at this time all Chinese news is more free to report on the virus. As someone very critical of the CCP, I'd say Caixin's reporting here is as authoritative as anywhere.
07d046··on The 'folly' of buying a fixer-upper yacht
Re solar power: the short answer is that wind carries far more energy than solar.

Tûranor PlanetSolar is a 31m catamaran with over 500 square metres of solar panels. I think I'm right in saying that its cruising speed is slower than any regular yacht. A big racing yacht is multiple times faster.

What I'd be interested in seeing is if a big wind turbine could be put on a yacht, rather than sails. One fun advantage is that it should be able to travel directly into the wind.

07d046··on Twitter is displaying China-made ads attacking Hong Kong protesters
Why do people keep posting this link in this thread? It's a terrible answer because it uncritically accepts the claim that a static rally at a venue that doesn't hold more than about 20,000 people had hundreds of thousands. Basic fact checking. Do it.
07d046··on Twitter is displaying China-made ads attacking Hong Kong protesters
I'm not sure where the Quora link comes from, and it's a bad answer because it parrots the claim that there were hundreds of thousands at a static rally at a venue than doesn't hold more than about 20,000.
07d046··on Twitter is displaying China-made ads attacking Hong Kong protesters
You might as well just read the Twitter thread that the article links to https://twitter.com/pinboard/status/1162711159000055808
07d046··on Medium suspends account that investigates Chinese concentration camps
The author of this blog, Shawn Zhang, has been doing important work chronicling internment camps in Xinjiang using satellite imagery.

Here's an article about him: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/world/article-ubc-student-us...

Hopefully his account suspension was because of orchestrated mass reporting triggering automatic systems, and his account will soon be restored. (A similar thing happened to many Chinese language Twitter accounts just before June 4, which is an important day on the Chinese political calendar.)

07d046··on HarmonyOS is Huawei’s Android alternative for smartphones and smart home devices
No, "harmony" is already a buzzword in China. See, for example, "harmonious society".
07d046··on HarmonyOS is Huawei’s Android alternative for smartphones and smart home devices
I know that Hongmeng here is 鸿蒙, but 红梦 is also "hongmeng"
07d046··on HarmonyOS is Huawei’s Android alternative for smartphones and smart home devices
The other problem is that "Hongmeng" literally means "Red dream", which isn't ideal for a company that wants people to believe it isn't controlled by the Chinese Communist Party.
07d046··on HarmonyOS is Huawei’s Android alternative for smartphones and smart home devices
I recognize the term "Hongmen", although I'm sure I'm not representative of most people. It's probably not in Huawei's interests to have an operating system colloquially known as Triad OS.
07d046··on HarmonyOS is Huawei’s Android alternative for smartphones and smart home devices
There's also a bit of discussion on the link I posted, which got enough points but never made it to the front page https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20651984
