Totally. It's like how we put brainfuck interpreters everywhere.

Enjoy your solo chess.
0c3ca83··on US tech stocks see sharp falls over AI cost fears
As sad as spending all your time playing group boardgames solo. In my book, that's pretty sad.

Gemini in particular is really bad about making shit up. It's often hilariously wrong. I wouldn't trust anything it says.

Wrong dates and times, confusing things associated with a person with things about a person, etc.

How sad.

In short: We've made the internet suck, and people are avoiding it.
0c3ca83··on El Niño is flooding California's coasts with the highest tides to come
So should the government run courts have been used as a tool to force them out of business or not?
0c3ca83··on Pico CSS is no longer maintained
Yeah, but why? Writing code for agents to use isn't fun, and buying tokens for it is a waste of money.
0c3ca83··on El Niño is flooding California's coasts with the highest tides to come
Right, I forgot that the press needs to conform to your preferences on what they publish. It also slipped my mind that the court system wasn't government run.

Unless you're asserting that you're the government?

If they had built out the same number of ASICs and GPUs, what you said would make sense.
0c3ca83··on El Niño is flooding California's coasts with the highest tides to come
I forgot that freedom of the press only applies when you personally approve of what they're printing.
0c3ca83··on We won't "just hang out"
I enjoy learning. But I want to apply what I learned to something meaningful.
0c3ca83··on LLM Voice
Yes, there are a lot of bad restaurants in the USA, and it's definitely not a good idea to eat there if you can avoid it.
0c3ca83··on LLM Voice
To stick with that analogy, you also wouldn't serve a tv dinner to a guest unless you were somehow incapacitated. You certainly wouldn't do it if you were running a restaurant.

Add to that the fact that AI is significantly worse for you than TV dinners, and has an outsized harm to humanity, and the conclusion is plain:

AI should not be imposed on others.

0c3ca83··on AlpineBSD
Yeah. We noticed. We've been complaining about the quality for a while.
0c3ca83··on AlpineBSD
> But I could never figure out what I was supposed to do with the patch after.

Send an email to the dev list with a patch. Same as Linux, Git itself, and a lot of other projects.

0c3ca83··on AlpineBSD
In which direction would you steer a house fire to lead to a better outcome?

There's no good endpoint for people if AI succeeds, it's that simple. It doesn't matter how many people get to roast marshmallows as the place burns.

0c3ca83··on Start Doing Graph Theory
It's also often wrong.

But also, I would like money I spend to go to people, not tokens.

0c3ca83··on AlpineBSD
As far as I can tell, either LLMs naturally fail to be viable, we collectively decide to put a stop to it, or we end up in one of several dystopias.

My bet is that we end up building an awful outcome for nearly humans, which means that trying to put a stop to it is a duty, even if it's likely to fail. I feel the same about climate change -- it's likely that we're going to fail to keep much of earth habitable, but it's not morally acceptable to stop trying.

0c3ca83··on AlpineBSD
I don't think they do. They just care about owning shiny things.

If you care about software (or math, or art, or literature, or any other aspect of human creativity), AI is at best like hiring someone to solve jigsaw puzzles for you.

Interesting response in light of your previous post, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48197191

You complain an the shit future we're building. Someone says fuck you to your dystopia and starts explicitly weeding it out, and you call it backwards.

0c3ca83··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
At that point, humans are pretty much unemployable anyway, so why worry?
0c3ca83··on The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI
Ah, my bad -- "Suck it up, shits getting worse for everyone because of what this industry is doing. The future sucks because of us, get used to it."
0c3ca83··on Survival LLM: AI assistant and emergency library that runs on your own computer
Have you considered just having a library?
0c3ca83··on Genie 4
Yes, but the other three options are AI failing naturally, AI being stopped, or people being unable to participate in the economy without UBI and starving.

Right now we're fully on track for one of several dystopias.

0c3ca83··on Genie 4
The people building AI must be deeply unhappy, and won't be satisfied until they impose their misery on everyone.
0c3ca83··on Wikipedia's Cleanup of AI-Generated Content
Well, at least some people are getting rich as the common resources we rely on get worse, so we can all sleep well at night, now that Spam Altman's bank account is secure.
0c3ca83··on The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI
Cool, "Life is getting worse, shut up and deal. Altman needs his returns."

Got it.

0c3ca83··on Genie 4
So, people will be able to completely skip living in the real world, and instead spend their entire time plugged into a simulation, like a vegetable.

Sounds wonderful. May as well skip this and just spend my life hooked up to an IV drip of drugs.

0c3ca83··on The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI
And what's the point of spending most of your life doing work that sucks so that others can hate their job too? It seems like a bad idea to make everything worse so we can have more bad software.

And, yes, the resulting software also sucks, and I'd pay extra to avoid it. There's been a noticeable drop in software quality over the last year or two.
