0x53··on The bond market isn’t buying what Fed Chair Warsh is selling
I think the article makes a good case why the difference in chair matters - ending forward guidance - confusing wording around what the target is now (pce vs “other stuff”) - The fact that he was appointed specifically to not raise rates

None of the applies to Mr. Powell whom the market seems to have put a great deal of trust in

0x53··on Death of the Status Update: Why 55% of Americans Stopped Posting on Social Media
This is so sadly true. I nostalgically remember early social media with the linear feed of things directly from friends as being a fun and positive place.
0x53··on Android Developer Verification: Threat masquerading as protection
I think the point they are trying to make is that in the terms of service Google says they get to define what is malware (halfway through article) so the author is trying to point out that exact danger: what happens when Google gets to randomly call things malware.
0x53··on When AI Builds Itself: Our progress toward recursive self-improvement
They also don’t have…a login page with authentication . To access the console you get an email link. No passkeys, passwords, 2fa, just an email.
0x53··on I turned my Kindle into my own personal newspaper
I also just did this! My solution was to automate creation of a set of static html pages that I view in the “experimental” kindle browser. It’s set to scrape a paper and build the site at 6am every morning. That was I don’t have to mess with the file transfers, and it’s there waiting for me when I wake up. Also I can mess with the layout a bit easier. Only downside is that I have to have next/back buttons rather than tapping on the screen.

0x53··on Netflix Declines to Raise Offer for Warner Bros
Netflix still gets breakup fee I suppose?
0x53··on Data centers in space makes no sense
Look into radiative cooling. Basically this, but more practical. Several companies working on it: https://www.skycoolsystems.com/
0x53··on FBI Director Waived Polygraph Security Screening for Three Senior Staff
Thankfully, it is illegal for private companies to do that.
0x53··on Show HN: Patio – Rent tools, learn DIY, reduce waste
Love the idea and hope you are successful. I really think there is a lot of value to be unlocked in sharing/renting tools. In my area we have a tool library which is handy.

Some ideas: - I would focus a lot of effort on making it incredibly easy and intuitive to list things. This is one of the primary barriers to me when using these types of apps. - maybe future idea would be to list things from Home Depot or other stores to expand the number of rentals that are available.

0x53··on Show HN: JuryNow – Get an anonymous instant verdict from 12 real people
Cool idea. Not sure exactly, but when it went to the jury duty section I just got the same question a bunch of times.
0x53··on Scott Galloway: How the US is destroying young people's future [video]
Been a fan of Scott’s for awhile. Don’t agree about everything but I think this video calls out the most important systemic problems.
0x53··on BlackCat ransomware group implodes after apparent payment by Change Healthcare
I should be against the law to pay a ransom for data.
0x53··on Contra Wirecutter on the IKEA air purifier (2022)
My wire cutter disagreement is their flashlight recommendation. They recommend a AA battery flashlight from Amazon that in my opinion is terrible (https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-flashlight/). This article indicates that maybe the referral money is a factor. I wonder how much influence that has.
0x53··on Beg Bounties (2021)
I guess I wonder about the opposite side of this. While I hate the beg bounty people as well, I don't think security researchers should work for free. I have found several security vulnerabilities that I have never reported to the company because their security policy was basically "send us everything you found for free and we won't give you any credit".
0x53··on MGM Seeks Contractors to Repair Infra in 3 Weeks
That makes sense. I feel like a federal government policy making it illegal to pay a ransom would go a long way towards making this type of thing less profitable.
0x53··on The WebP 0day
What does provably correct mean here? I think you mean that the code doesn’t have any memory corruption vulnerabilities. However, that is only one class of vulnerability, so more techniques then just relying on a memory safe language are required for secure software.
0x53··on The WebP 0day
The only publicly posted price list that I know of is zerodium’s (evil people). http://zerodium.com/program.html They currently offer 2.5 million for an android zero click with persistence. This doesn’t give you the persistence piece without another bug so maybe 2m. Of course, they are only willing to offer that price if they could sell it for much more.
0x53··on MGM Seeks Contractors to Repair Infra in 3 Weeks
That statement is incredibly interesting. I wonder what the hackers think they attempt to gain by publicly talking about their operations?
0x53··on Windows Subsystem for Linux gets new 'mirrored' network mode
I always use wsl 1 instead of 2. One of the primary reasons is that you can directly control your network card from 1. So with the mirrored networking mode 2 is starting to look a little bit better.
0x53··on Ask HN: Where to find open-source house plans?
I have wanted to build something similar for a long time, but I would like it to be a passive house as well. I gave up on ever finding a premade plan. Instead I have been using fusion 360 and sweet home 3d to design it myself.
0x53··on AdNauseam: uBlock Origin fork silently clicking ads on behalf of users
I used this for a while. It generates a gallery of all the ads that you “click” on which is quite entertaining. It’s interesting to see what ads come up based on what it clicks.
0x53··on Battery-electric “Infinity Train” will charge itself using gravity (2022)

0x53··on Twitter has officially changed its logo to ‘X’
The other problem with “x” as a logo is that it looks a lot like a close button.
0x53··on Unicode Character “𝕏” (U+1D54F)
Can’t find it now, but originally it was reported that Elon got the logo from someone who replied to his tweet and that it was the lid logo for someone’s unsuccessful podcast.
0x53··on Unshackle: A tool to bypass Windows and Linux password logins
Recently I forgot my password to a laptop I didn’t use much. It was bitlocker encrypted, but I had saved the keys. So I booted into a live Linux system mounted the bitlocker partition with dislocker and then dumped the Sam hashes with impacket’s secretsdump. Then I used hashcat to try and crack my own password since I thought I remembered parts of it. Ended up working!

0x53··on Making infrared cooling paint from grocery store items [video]
I really like this guys videos. I have been thinking about this passive cooling concept for the last few years ever since I learned about skycool which is an attempt to commercialize a similar concept (radiative cooling). The main issue for most of the US is that you only want to cool for part of the year. one idea I had would be to paint blinds for windows or the louvered roof of a pergola with this type of paint so that you could open it and let the sun shine through when it is cold, but reject heat when it is hot. I’ve also tried to do some calculations for building a panel with blinds that could flip between black and cooling paint that could be hooked up to a heat pump. Both of these ideas exist on their own (see skycool panels and solar heat panels), but would be cool if you could combine them by having blinds that flip inside the panel. One of the main difficulties is that if it is cloudy outside the amount of heat the panels can reject or absorb is greatly diminished. So it may be that you need some way to store heat or cool. I think there has been some progress on this front using phase changing materials and there are now a few products that are commercially available. In any case, I think radiative cooling is an extremely cool concept and I’m excited to see what ways people come up with to harness it.

Here is a video showing radiative cooling being used for interior cooling: https://youtu.be/CVginpnALL8
