1001101··on The World’s First U2 Spy Plane Photo Shoot at the Edge of Space
I would say absence of evidence is not evidence of absence in this context.
1001101··on Over-grazing and desertification in the Syrian steppe root causes of war (2015)
The role of the Ataturk Dam is something that I rarely see mentioned in this context.
1001101··on FedNow Is Live
Another concern I have heard voiced is that CBCD could be programmed - eg. you can't buy X, or you can only buy Y at certain times, or for certain prices, etc. and has the potential for reduced liberty vs. cash.
1001101··on Nazi Symbols on Ukraine’s Front Lines Highlight Thorny Issues of History
Too late to edit, but in response to earlier poster that deleted their reply, national day of commemoration is probably more accurate than holiday, agreed, thank you. There was some confusion on this point from sources deriving from: https://www.svoboda.org/a/29664681.html (translated headline indicates holiday). I don’t think it changes the thrust of the original point much, but I prefer precision as well.
1001101··on Nazi Symbols on Ukraine’s Front Lines Highlight Thorny Issues of History
The benign ignorance of symbology that comes across in the article aside, the celebration of Stepan Bandera with a national holiday, street names in their capital and elsewhere, monument, etc. is telling.
1001101··on Why AI Will Never Rival Human Creativity
'Never' is a long time given the pace at which AI is advancing.
1001101··on Scientists regenerate hair cells that enable hearing
30+ years of midwest raves did me in. One sound system had 1MW bass bins - have been to some with ~40ft x ~15ft of bass bins. Only one ruptured ear drum in all of that time (Regis - didn't even seem that loud) - that's the ear that is the worst. Doesn't bother me, other than anxiety about potential neurological effects.
1001101··on Ask HN: I won't have Internet access for months, How could I use my time?
Focus on health and safety for yourself and people you care about. In the hierarchy of needs of becoming a better developer, I would say that is foundational.
1001101··on Google, Microsoft CEOs Called to AI Meeting at White House
They'll have company soon. The benefits of AI will not be shared evenly, and will result in structural dislocation.
1001101··on The Battle over Techno’s Origins
Great book about the rise of the Berlin techno scene called Der Klang Der Familie. In my read of that, the techno of Berlin and Detroit arose organically, simultaneously, and they sort of found each other serendipitously, and were connected through clubs like Tresor and labels like Interfisch. The world wasn't as connected in the late 80's early 90's as it is today, and particularly for the sorts of people that were squatting in abandoned structures in East Berlin.
1001101··on Telling your inner critic to chill
A book I read recently suggested to let your inner critic speak, but then let, what it calls, your inner advocate get the last word - counter what the inner critic is saying. I have tried this on a number of occasions and it's been net positive for me - YMMV.
1001101··on The sound of the dialup, pictured (2012)
HST training sequence was the best sounding. Would love to hear that again, and see a breakdown of what was going on there. Probably not as easy as maybe it's a trade secret vs. published standard. Also the stealth fighter of modems if you remember the print ads for it.
1001101··on Qatar intelligence operation against FIFA officials
This is probably my favorite sporting event, but I will also be boycotting. For others I have talked to that are doing the same, it was principally the corruption. For me it was the labor practices and the 6500+ people that died working on the stadiums that will likely be torn down or fall into disuse once the event is over.
1001101··on Tell HN: A disabled 40-year-old person founded a startup and makes a living
Michael, best of luck to you. You aren't the only one thinking along these lines. I saw this list of good advice from YC on the macro setup back in may, posted on news.yc:

1001101··on China Evergrande crisis deepens as lender seizes headquarters
They'll owe their creditors 300 million grand forever?
1001101··on Ask HN: Lost in My Career
This is me, but I watch a couple of episodes of Deadliest Catch, and then plopping down on the Aeron with a good cup of coffee whenever to write code takes on a different perspective. Good luck!
1001101··on Edible insects role in transmission of parasitic diseases to humans (2019)
I'm the only one in my family that will take a pill. Everyone else will only do gummies. I'm with you, but I'm the minority in my small sample. I'd be looking to maximize absorption/bioavailability vs. flavor.
1001101··on Ask HN: How to get a job as a compiler engineer?
I went to a pretty fascinating talk by a Green Hills engineer a while back about memory barriers and how compilers treat them. Definitely a good company's careers page to keep an eye on. Good luck!
1001101··on Edible insects role in transmission of parasitic diseases to humans (2019)
I will eat crickets when the rentiers do, which is to say, never.
1001101··on Edible insects role in transmission of parasitic diseases to humans (2019)
Vegan for ~15 years here. It's important to be thoughtful about nutrition when going that route (I do various supplements 2-3x day). Common pitfalls for people are B vitamins, zinc, and iron (as your friend found out the hard way, perhaps), and there are vegan gummies with these specific vitamins/minerals in them.
1001101··on Does the dog die?
No lie, last night my wife and I started Prey (Predator prequel). About 5 minutes in we both started questioning what was going to happen to the dog (which happens to look resemble our fur baby) and turned it off. My wife said we should find out what happens to the dog before starting it again. I had no idea this was a thing!
1001101··on My customized Wim Hof breathing method
I tried this a while back with a pulse oximeter on. Didn't like what I saw. Was my first and last time.
1001101··on Ask HN: What lifestyle choices have led to improved cognitive function/memory?
Too late to edit, so I'll add a reply: if you really feel like something in your brain is holding you back, you might want to do some tests with a specialist. I know people of all ages who have done this and benefited from the insights. GL.
1001101··on Ask HN: What lifestyle choices have led to improved cognitive function/memory?
For me: diet (vitamins, algae oil, a little creatine), sleep (tracked), exercise (HIIT), reading (non-fiction - help build your vocab/mental maps), dual-n-back.

There are other tricks that I have heard of like the 'memory palace' [1], or mindfulness meditation, but those I don't think really worked for me personally, YMMV.

Have always been interested in nootropics, but I'm a dot the i's cross the t's kind of person, so haven't had anything to do with those.

1001101··on Ask HN: How do you have fun without alcohol?
As someone that had problems up until around your age and has been on the wagon for a while, there was something in my life that made me choose between alcohol and something better. There are two paths your life can take going forward: the one with alcohol, and the one without. 'Fun' aside, the one without is much better. The first 6 mos - 1 yr are the hardest in all respects, but once you get through that it's a little more second nature. Find something to do instead. For me it was work - exercise might be better - you can tell people you're not drinking because you're in training. Non-alcoholic beers helped me, others say that's not a good idea YMMV - Heineken 0.0. Good luck to you!
1001101··on LastPass users warned their master passwords are compromised
A simple rubber hose would do. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber-hose_cryptanalysis
1001101··on Ask HN: At what age is “too old” to work in tech as a software engineer?
I've worked with a number of technically-minded MDs in product design consulting in the medical space. A couple of interesting diagnostic products come to mind. They had enough of a foot in both spaces to come up with some really interesting ideas - Doesn't have to be one or the other.
1001101··on Will it rot my students' brains if they use Mathematica? (2002)
BC calc in high school, I probably leaned on Mathematica a little too much, but mostly to check my work. Once, I got stumped on an integral and what Mathematica churned out wasn't even close (this was '94). Got a nice little note about that in the margin from my teacher. 0 points. Might still be some Mathematica pitfalls for teachable moments.
1001101··on Ask HN: What's the Point of Life?
Common to our views is that it can be deconstructed into limbic circuitry, and technology will eventually find its way there.
1001101··on Ask HN: What's the Point of Life?
Paraphrasing here from reading this many years ago, but in one of Richard Dawkins' books, the answer someone gave was "I don't know, but I do know I have reservations at my favorite restaurant for lunch and will be having my favorite sandwich." For some reason that has stuck with me.

It all ends up about the same with the heat death of the universe.
