Yeah same experience. People working in Facebook (I had a friend there) say it is only pattern behaviour, they can predict your interests, check when you meet with your friends, share WIFIs, etc, so they can imagine things you have been talking about. I call this bullshit. I dont know if my friend working at Facebook believes this, or was just hiding it for me, but it's 0% chance of them doing that. Also because I never got any of these recommendations BEFORE I mentioned it out loud, which means their prediction engine (if it exists) also knows when I am going to talk about it!
101008··on Show HN: WhatsApp MCP running free on Cloudflare
I am not saying this proudly, but given how important is to stay in touch with others, I would never jeopardize my Gmail account and my Whatsapp account. Understand that using a bot to access your Whatsapp account is against TOS and your account could be suspended.
101008··on Thinking will become a hobby
I am implying exactly that. At the end of the chian there are always humans, so if AI takes all the jobs, who is going to pay for AI? Companies won't pay for AI because at the end of the chain no one is going to sell anything to anyone...
101008··on Someone on Torrent Sites Kept Fucking with My Sonarr
Noooo, the memories! As a kid who owned the computer at home, I tried playing with it, moving files to it (I think?), but I never understood what it did or how it worked. Good times where computeres were there to explore!
101008··on Thinking will become a hobby
Nvidia sells to OpenAI? OpenAI sells to...? If it's another company, there is always consumers (people) at the end of the chain. Remove that and then you remove other companies in the upper direction...
101008··on Margaret Hamilton has died
Her story and her work is so inspiring. And I feel a bit sad reading about it...

When I started working on this field I dreamt of working on things like that. Not sending anything to the moon, but code that would achieve difficult stuff, challenging tasks, things I would be proud of.

Today I mostly do silly APIs, and with AI is worse and worse... I wonder if there are still jobs where you have to do novel stuff, new algorithms, more like a scientific approach to the code, instead of just deploy the same thing every other company has already done.

101008··on Show HN: AI search for every photo and every frame of video on macOS
I don't see why LLMs should make the legal part different. It's like saying if you can copyright a book considering LLMs now can copy / write a new one in just one hour. Making it faster doesn't change the legal aspect / ownership of something.

101008··on 56k.rip – the 1996 dial-up internet experience
Amazing. When we were all living offline by default, and you had to go online. Now sadly it's the opposite.

(When did this change? Around 2012?)

101008··on America.gov
This is like one country seizing the land of your country and your response being "Stop whining and ask your govt to defend". America (continent, word, anything) doesn't belong to the USA.
101008··on RSS Feeds for Last.fm
I want to do the same but I live in a big city (millions of people). How do you recommend approaching this? There is no board/calendar that would get the attention of thousands of people and without that it's useless in a big city.
101008··on The "Windows XP Box" (2003)
Sounds like a fun project and very cool for the nostalgic people (like me).

A bit off topic, but I also loved the fact that the website remains like an antique website from that era (I know the article is from 2003 but the design is clearly not "modern"). I am going to say something probably stupid, but I feel there is a correlation between old/vintage design = good content.

101008··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
Why "agents" instead of just the company doing it? The title "OpenAI carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems" would be accurate too (I know the original is in the post, and not editorialized here).

I don't care if the attack was an algorithm, agents, a bot, a piece of software, the company responsible for them did it.

101008··on Antiquated HTML Snippets and Artefacts
This was not a HTML snippet by itself, but I remember early 2000s almost every website had three small icons somewhere: Set as homepage, Add to favorites, Contact (an envelope/email icon). I think I never used them (I didn't use Favorites back then, don't know why), but it was nice to see that they were available.
101008··on The Real Luxuries In Life
As other comments already stated and have stated, money should never be the goal, it's the middle. Having money allows you to not worry about some of those topics, or having more time for them. If you don't have more it means you must worry about that. Having money means you don't: you don't have to worry about rent, health insurance, paying for experiences, food, etc. It's true, you don't need that much money, but still.
101008··on Defrag98: Windows 98 Disk Defragmenter Simulator Online
I agree. It may sound elitist but back then you need to understand a few concepts to use a computer. From simple things like a filesystem (folders, file, different file types, things my 19 years old nephew don't know), to how to install software, how to download software (!) and then things even a bit more technical: an operative system, how it works, booting, drivers, etc.

Now everything is just easier (which is better for most people!) but I miss the old days.

101008··on A joke domain purchase turned in geopolitical warfare
I had this idea before of sending ballons to "the space" with a collectible object and then retrieve them, saying "I have this specific object that was in space too". Is it possible or am I dreaming too much?
101008··on How Claude's text watermarking works
I may be wrong but in my opinion this is not technically possible. They can say a text is not AI written with more confidence, but it should be absolutely impossible to say a text is 100% AI written. There is nothing that stops a human to write something AI also wrote. It could be less probable, it could be not common, but there is no way to be 100% sure a human did not write something.

Unless they can provide logs and attach an output to a user/session, they are just saying "This is something that could have been a Claude output", but that's all. Even in their confidence it could be wrong.

It reminds me of signature authenticators. They are just saying "Yeah this is something this author/celeb could have signed", or "This is something the celeb def did not sign", but they can't be never 100% sure.

101008··on Show HN: iPhone app takes simultaneous images from 2 lenses, fuses into 1 photo
Hijacking this comment because of this line that reminded me of something:

"There is a crazy amount of image processing going on behind the scenes in each smartphone"

I bought the Pixel 10 because it said it had great zooming capabilities. After 5X (that means 10X), it's completely stupid. Basically it takes a very blurred photo and then tries to reconstruct it with AI. The final results are completely awful and really distant from reality.

Any advice in how to improve that?

101008··on More than 10 firms pay up to $100k a month for access to Truth Social posts
Completely ignorant here, and I don't want to ask an AI (I don't trust them on these issues). Could you give me an example how you can make money with this information?

Again, question as someone who doens't live in the US so I am not used how you can profit from this. I guess it may be because a war may impact the market and you can invest (or the opposite) with this, but in my mind bombing Iran wouldn't move the market by much (the consequences would, but by then everyone is on the same page).

Thank you!

101008··on How to Make a Nintendo 64 Game in 2026
It may be counterintuitive at first, but why wouldn't be possible? It's one of the perks of "offline" hardware without subscriptions or DRM. You build a piece of hardware (cartridge) that attaches to another one (console) and it works. As long as the console works, there shouldn't be a problem.
101008··on What if LLMs escape through inferences itself? This is fiction. For now
It started as a good idea but I couldn't continue reading since it was clearly LLM written. A lot of "It was not X, it was Y".

"Prometheus-9 knew that the token sequence it was generating was not a simple response: it was a security test. "

"It was not just an engine: it was the lingua franca of planetary AI."

(and so many other tell-tale signs of AI writing)

101008··on Train sim created by just one person is being called the best ever made
I think this is incredible, and I am so happy for him, he deserves all the praise he gets (and maybe more).

I will sin and make this about me, briefly, but just to say that when I was a kid/teenager with a really slow computer, a) I enjoyed coding much more, b) I think I was a way better programmer. Constraints make you better, you have to be smarter. I miss those times.

101008··on 98% Isn't Much
Some people are locked in old devices and can't upgrade. Basically you are doing class discrimination...
101008··on We Are the Last People Who Know How It Works
> The issue with this is that we don't know how it works. Generally speaking, we know how the level of abstraction that we were born with works.

What? Definitely not. I went to university and my first two years were subjects where I had to understand really deep levels of abstractions. I had to build logic gates, I had to work with hardware, wires, etc. I didnt see the point back then (I never used any of that professionally). The same about algorithms, databases, and a lot of things. But now I find it valuable and thankful that my professors (and whoever designed the career) considered important topics that I had to lear.

101008··on 'We had to get out of the way': The backlash over delivery robots
I am not from the US so I would never encounter one, but what happens if you kick them / hurt them / destroy them? Do they have a recording camera that would show you did it?
101008··on Ntsc-rs – open-source video emulation of analog TV and VHS artifacts
In the same vein, the most beautiful part of Patti Smith performing "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" at Nobel Prize Award Ceremony is when she mistakes the lyrics. Whenever I need to cry, I watch that video.
101008··on Disagreement Among Frontier LLMs on Real-World Fact-Checks
Unfortunately most people are not aware of this and treat LLM models as this superpowered brain who knows everything and can do everything.
101008··on HERMES.md in commit messages causes requests to route to extra usage billing
The future is very dark where you get a bad charge (it can happen, systems are complex, so I don't want to judge base on that), but you can't fill a ticket or complain to anyone about this.

I got a $2 charge for a Facebook Ad (I know, $2 is nothing and I shouldn't use Meta), and it was completely wrong. It's impossible to talk to someone in Facebook about this. The AI chat is completely clueless and can't do anything. Their help page say you can ask for a refund (I can't, because the payment doesn't appear on the billing page or payment activity), but they tell you they will close your account if you do it, like... wtf?

I am scared for the future where AI handles all of this. It should be ilegal. Companies should have a X support people every Y customers or something like that. I see it everyday and it's getting worse and worse...

Some days I think the only solution is what Bombita did in the movie Relatos Salvajes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vP3IwmM3XLQ
