131012··on Does creatine make you smarter?
I think another source of variation on the results is the actual nutritional intake of the subjects.

The vegan/vegetarian is a big spectrum. A vegetarian eating plenty of dairy products and eggs should in theory be much better creatine-equipped than a poor vegan student feeding on noodles and ketchup pastas. A lot of pseudo-meat for vegans are full of processed shit.

Confusion will be even higher if you include fish in the vegetarian diet, which is odd but some people do that.

Could the cognitive effect works in the case of creatine deficiency (vegan) and not in the case a vegetarian (low creatine but not deficient) ?

131012··on China’s open-weights AI strategy is winning
Could it be that the startups that embed LLMs in a product will prefer Openweights for a more stable economic model, while SWE who use LLMs as a tool prefer SOTA to produce code?
131012··on Late Bronze Age Collapse
A blogger.
131012··on Late Bronze Age Collapse
Typos are frequent (including in this blog post), and have been for a while. Bret is not an AI bot.
131012··on The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity (1987) [pdf]
I stopped reading when the author classified people in binary categories. Absolute proof of their own stupidity.
131012··on I’m worried that they put co-pilot in Excel
Because when one exec ask: "Why is that?" the room goes silent.
131012··on YouTube is taking down videos on performing nonstandard Windows 11 installs
Nah it just got promoted as the database for PowerBI. /s
131012··on AI is an attack from above on wages": cognitive scientist Hagen Blix
> I think the argument that automated outputs are inherently and universally worse on objective quality measures

Just remove universally and the argument stands. The point here is to focus on the curve (it will depress the overall quality of products) not the outliers (I really like my Patagonia jacket).

131012··on Eating capitalism: How our food got hijacked by profits
There is more to life than Pepsi or Coca-Cola.
131012··on Ask HN: How do you say “I don’t know, but I’ll get back to you” confidently?
If it is relevant, I tend to take very good care to understand the request. I ask follow-up questions, take notes, etc. Not only it is useful (understanding the problem is key after all!) but it will show you care, and that your "I don't know" is not synonymous of "I don't care" or "Just open a fucking ticket".
131012··on AI tools are making the world look weird
Trust by Francis Fukuyama explores this relation if you want more meat than comments on a board.
131012··on I gave the AI arms and legs then it rejected me
Since you're asking: I took a pause mid-reading and told myself: "Woah, I like their writing style."
131012··on LLM Inevitabilism
> LLMs do not think independently and do not have the ability to challenge your assumptions

It IS possible for a LLM to challenge your assumptions, as its training material may include critical thinking on many subjects.

The helpful assistant, being almost by definition a sycophant, cannot.

131012··on Show HN: My LLM CLI tool can run tools now, from Python code or plugins
This is exactly why I follow your work, this mix of critical thinking and enthusiasm. Please keep going!
131012··on Ask HN: Where are all the touch-based art forms?
I don't know for sports, but sex indeed. And just like any other art form, some are absolute virtuosos and some draw cheap logos and are about to be replaced by AI.
131012··on Kidney stone procedure "has the potential to be game changing"
Nutrition science does change at a surprising rate. In case of doubt... drink plenty of water!
131012··on Kidney stone procedure "has the potential to be game changing"
most citrus fruits help to reduce kidney stones, but not grapefruit. grapefruit has different weird interaction with medication and does increase risk of kidney stones, contrary to other citrus fruits.

131012··on 'Cancer-killing pill' is now being tested on humans
Sorry to break it to you, but someday you will die. Better get used to it.
131012··on Aspartame sweetener to be declared possible cancer risk by WHO, say reports
Well no. May I suggest water?
131012··on Ask HN: Is everyone becoming a Product Manager these days?
Care to give more details about your third point?
131012··on Ask HN: Is it just me or GPT-4's quality has significantly deteriorated lately?
I think they got stuck at the heteronormative bias, but the real blatant bias here is class. Most men are working class, and it's been like that forever* (more peasants than knights, etc.)

* since agriculture, most likely.

131012··on Catholic group spent millions on app data that tracked gay priests
Christianism considers everyone intrinsically bad.

"Original sin is the Christian doctrine that holds that humans, through the fact of birth, inherit a tainted nature in need of regeneration and a proclivity to sinful conduct." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_sin

131012··on Ask HN: Why on Earth does Europe have 3 month notice periods to switch jobs?
Let me turn that around and suggest that when America finally embrace universal culture, it will understand that arming every random person with an assault rifle with extended magazine is a very, very bad idea.
131012··on Ask HN: Why on Earth does Europe have 3 month notice periods to switch jobs?
I think for many of us outside the US, your culture of dog eat dog and I owe nothing to nobody except my sacred duty to get rich is the root of your social problems.
131012··on Pakistani gov degrades Wikipedia connections due to blasphemy
May I suggest they really do care about the situation and this is why they refuse to block anything.
131012··on Ask HN: Lead developer but I just don't enjoy management
I would add that since you are "head of the department" I feel that your bosses trust you enough to run with you if you just tell them that what the department need is a full-time manager.

You are also in a very privileged position of defining the role of that manager. You like some managing tasks? You can keep them. You can even make it your hire, and hire the kind of manager you want to help you with these tasks. Since you can recruit yourself, that person will have some loyalty toward you.

I think you are in a very good position to build your dream job from scratch. Just do it my dude :)

131012··on Grad student unions strike deal with University of California
And when it becomes a huge challenge from a budgeting standpoint, you need appropriate administrative staff to figure this out.
131012··on Grad student unions strike deal with University of California
For example, if you want to use modern tools (aka code) in a department where nobody is hired for their coding skill, you need some staff. And you need to pay them well, because... you know. Startups, SF, FAANGs.
131012··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
