Like most of your standards. No-one knows why, but it's obviously advantageous to defend it religiously as "better than everyone else"

I guess the fact that I'm not mildy surprised that people can be married for 60 years says something about how different our cultures are? Even though we're on HN discussing so many other things we have in common.

Representatives in the UK parliament are elected to represent a constituency, mostly the size of a town. In this case the constituency of Clanton is having a by-election (special election), because the representative resigned. With reading up on why this happened.

I wonder if they'll show the director's cut?

I was in high school when the movie came out, and we were on a 6 week road trip all over the USA that summer, so I couldn't see the movie. Those days they also published books for a lot of the popular movies (sold at gas stations), so I bought and read the book. I only got to see the movie a month or 2 after release when we were back home in Baton Rouge. The book was the director's cut, and to this day I seem to remember that the version of the movie I saw also had that ending (my brain playing tricks on me). There's also the scene where they cut open his skull to put his cpu in learning mode in the gas station. I don't know why they cut that, it works so well with John asking "are we learning yet" in a next scene.

That's more expensive than I expected. In South Africa you can do a 3 year degree at a top university (in SA terms, top 300 in the world) for about that, including lodging, food and other expenses. Mind, not foreigners, that's the tax subsidised cost for locals.

Many very interesting stories here of people that took similar paths. As the parent of a teenager that used to be an absolute model student, but recently (last year) started rebellious behaviour, tanking their academics with it, I'm curious how many with similar stories think they would have or could have taken a different path with better or different parental support?

We're trying our very best to support and guide without shaming. The difficult part is the influence of friends, specifically a boyfriend, that were convinced led to much of this. Forbidding the relationship is not going to have the right effect. So we're trying to manage it with rules to try and prevent the opportunity to make bad decisions. And talking a lot about honesty, values and respect. There's still respect in our relationship, and I feel that's the key for us to be able to support her.

How much easier can this make it to gain unauthorised access to buildings using remotes or RFID for access control? How dangerous is this?

Sub 1GHz radio, RFID and IR

How dangerous can this be in the wrong hands? Seems like it can significantly lower the barrier to entry for someone wanting to gain unauthorised access to many buildings that use remotes or RFID for access control.

He also doesn't seem to know quite what "delusional" means. He uses it to describe people that don't agree with him.

I greatly admire many if his achievements. My comment is that I'm surprised that he was able to be so successful while many times taking a position so at odds with a sentiment held by most of society. My opinion is that "picking your battles" seems to be a more successful strategy in general. I'm also not commenting on the ethics of being flexible about your convictions and how you express them.

I looked up a definition of "tone deaf" to see if I misunderstood in my interpretation of the term and how I used it above.

>having or showing an obtuse insensitivity or lack of perception particularly in matters of public sentiment, opinion, or taste

Having read that I stand by what I said. In my opinion he has shown "an obtuse insensitivity or lack of perception of public sentiment" on more than one occasion. The Minsky message being a very good example. Whether you agree with the sentiment or not is seperate from clearly being obtusely insensitive about the public sentiment I think.

13hours··on An Analysis of 155 Postmortems from Game Development [pdf]
I agree Agile is the way to address many of these issues. I think Agile is a way of working that doesn't try to estimate everything up front. Rather one or 2 short iterations at a time. If you're trying to estimate your whole backlog up front when you do Agile, you're back to waterfall realy.
13hours··on An Analysis of 155 Postmortems from Game Development [pdf]
"To avoid schedule slippage, game developers need to spend more time to plan out all the work that needs to be done so that no tasks are overlooked when giving estimates. By planning out tasks, you can also estimate each task individually, and give a more accurate prediction, instead of an optimistic one."

When things don't work out according to the schedule, there are generally two reactions :

1. We didn't estimate well enough, we need to estimate better next time.

2. Maybe this estimation thing is impossible to get right, let's not put too much trust in being able to estimate accurately, but rather find ways of working that don't require estimating all work up front.

I've seen that 1 gradually becomes 2 with experience (the experience of getting the estimates wrong every time).

Piggy backing on this to plug our game as well: Fleet of One [1]. Retro 80s space shooter with an original soundtrack composed by a SAMA (South African Music Awards) nominated musician, original artwork by a professional artist, a lot of time spent on level design with classic bosses. Have a look, there's a free demo as well. No IAPs. Real love went into this.

We didn't even make the development cost back. We actively fought against the idea of IAPs and trying to hook whales, even though it would have been easy to introduce mechanisms to do it (on the hardest level it's almost impossible to beat).

13hours··on What do you mean ‘we need more time’? Project schedule estimation in software
I don't think working fixed price quote would have given you a different outcome though? The team produced bad quality product, fixed cost or agile won't change that.

Selecting the team to build the product on price is often a bad idea, and that's all fixed cost gives you above agile (the ability to select on price).

I used to as well, until I started to refuse to do it. It truly is in the best interest of the customer to work this way, and I explain it to them. The ones that understand it and buy into this way of working are the ones I work with.
