3form··on We're releasing the weights of Mistral Large 4
"Cyber benchmarks, while achieving an average refusal rate of 96.6% on malicious cyber requests, the highest we measure among open models."

I feel like stating the obvious here and hence like I'm missing something. Where is the statistic about not refusing the non malicious requests? I can achieve the same performance with refusing when random(1000) < 967.

3form··on Cuba is skipping its November 1, 2026 clock change and staying on DST until 2027
Note that DST doesn't change that. It makes the already long days feel longer, not the short ones. Or you could view it as your mornings being brighter in winter perhaps. But yeah, as such it never made much sense to me, though maybe my view is too much mid latitude driven.
3form··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
Of course not, but that's a separate problem that I didn't treat. It was about the ability to make that choice, I don't think that that my choice should be respected is a controversial statement worth debating.
3form··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
Choose whether you want logs when creating your instance? Good practice.
3form··on Git for the US Code
Every system gets gamed, and so is the current one. The goal is that the people can more easily stay informed. Even with mixed authors problem you highlight would be still an improvement.
3form··on New iMac with M6
The difference being that the M-series machines do not have good prospects in terms of running Linux well. As I would personally not want to run Windows for sure, this matters a lot.
3form··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
The key was enough of a statement of TLS's place in their business. No new information here.
3form··on Beyond Tetris: The other games of Alexey Pajitnov [video]
Honestly, the biggest discovery to me is that the game was created later than I expected. 1984 in the video title would put it in the same year as Duck Hunt; Wikipedia seems to suggest 1985 was the actual year it was published, which is the same year as Super Mario Bros (which itself came few years after Donkey Kong).
3form··on Solar surpasses nuclear power globally for first time
True, I conflated decay with fission. So another source indeed!
3form··on macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL
"Why have X when Y costs $N in tokens" is becoming a tired thought-terminating cliche.

It shouldn't be user's responsibility to have to get their binaries to work at all costs.

3form··on Solar surpasses nuclear power globally for first time
Arguably nuclear fission in this case.
3form··on Containment and monitoring failures are to blame for AI hacking reports: experts
That's my view. The end goal is to become Too Big To Fail, the means is stifling the competition and getting military funding.
3form··on AI is a tool and using it well takes skill
>I've learnt more since the advent of LLMs than I did in the 10 years prior. And it's not just me; that is most people's experience with LLMs

My own usage too. Yet I believe that your environment is biased towards ambitious adults aligned with your values, who want to learn things. I don't think it's representative of world as a whole, and I'm even further worried about the youth, being a particularly vulnerable group. Let's hope that teachers and parents of today and tomorrow will keep reinforcing the idea that knowing things and having skills is worthwhile.

3form··on PS5 Linux lead quits: "a bunch of noobs using LLMs" that "they don't understand"
I would hardly call the requirement to understand the code you push "gatekeeping".
3form··on The Waymo effect: how AI is quietly making research less collaborative
Meaning, you wouldn't touch it with a ten feet pole?
3form··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra for a big leap in performance and AI compute
Same here. Sadly I think the voices like ours won't be heard, though, because Apple's looking for someone who's going to buy in on the whole ecosystem, and I think we're not it. Or at least I'm not.
3form··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
Well, I have not once found a single case where an app reacting to screenshots and controlling the process in any way was anything to me but hostile and annoying. This one does not help.

It somehow is perfect example of how modern software engineering feels to go astray for me. A feature in my device working completely in benefit of the one providing said software. I wish, and wish only I can, that this trend goes away at some point.

3form··on Illinois just passed a law that puts Linux on the hook for age verification
Potentially. The existence of the law exemplifies the idea the law is there to protect someone; all you need then to upgrade it is to argue that the current method is insufficient protection. Spirit of the law has been established - letter of the law will follow.
3form··on How to Make a Nintendo 64 Game in 2026
It's true that open handhelds are where it's at right now. Steam Deck is also just simply a wonderful thing. Yet I know it's just somehow not the same as it's been before; architecturally, there's less innovation, just more of doing the "obvious right thing" here, and the big players, especially PS and Xbox are just sad attempts at dumbing down PCs to keep their walled gardens. So, nice things are still there, it's sadly just not as exciting.
3form··on How to Make a Nintendo 64 Game in 2026
>I think he picked up my "gaming is dead now" outlook since he doesn't really have any interest in new systems or games anymore

This is interesting, as I was about to say that gaming has never been more alive than it is now - but it's true that at least the developments in hardware are not nearly as exciting as they used to be in the past. Maybe that's what he's feeling?

3form··on The Dunning-Kruger effect may just be a data artefact (2020)
I've seen at least 3 different ideas on this topic:

- people not skilled in a thing are bad at estimating their skills

- people are generally bad at estimating their skills

- people skilled in a particular areas often feel they are intellectually fit in other areas

Out of these three I feel like there's some truth in it, at least anecdotally.

3form··on ChatGPT, Roblox to fall under strictest EU rules for platforms
What do you mean by "until"? I would argue that this situation is the _result_ of being stunted and dependent in the first place.
3form··on ChatGPT, Roblox to fall under strictest EU rules for platforms
>This is just another shake down. Quickly becoming the least business friendly place on Earth.

Yes, exactly - isn't that the point?

3form··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
I enjoy the funny implication it creates, that then perhaps if you're entering US in 2026 it means there's something wrong with you.
3form··on Google Discloses $94.1B in SpaceX Stock, Marking 6% Stake
In fact it was often mentioned as a recommended way to try to invest in SpaceX via proxy, before IPO. I don't think that advice had much merit, but it was there nevertheless.
3form··on Android may soon restrict on-device ADB
Mind you, I'm not arguing for the CVE, just complaining that the current thinking is very selective.
3form··on Android may soon restrict on-device ADB
Why not both? Countries should be able to signal which business practices are undesirable.
3form··on Android May Soon Restrict On-Device ADB
Because you know, the actual solution would be to have more granularity in authentication process than "allow whole device to attach to ADB", but that would be like, difficult... so they're not going to so that.

Right now any app on my PC connected to ADB could manipulate my phone then, and that's somehow not a CVE?

3form··on Android may soon restrict on-device ADB
What I find most annoying aspect of all software from 2010s onwards is this stupid discourse and associated results:

- some people want A, or A might even be already in use

- A is problematic for $MODERATE_OR_MILD_REASON

- B is introduced and made default

- a config switch between A and B is never considered

So, so tiring. If I want to bind ADB to localhost, _let me_. It's my device and my problem, ffs.

3form··on ARC-AGI Leaderboard
How do they handle these assurances? Personally I have zero trust in the AI companies not trying to use this data to get ahead in the game, and short of sharing the weights and harness so that the benchmarkers can run the models themselves, I don't see a satisfactory solution with this mindset.
