3stacks··on What is the best shape of a city? Modelling effect of urban form on distance
It's definitely a drag battling cars most of the time. The path optimisation that forces them to all choose 1 lane when 3 lanes are available and go to the same direction is so annoying.

I would like a better alternative but eh, it's just spare time fun thing

Excellent. I am looking for better strategies for Cities Skylines
3stacks··on U.S. Small Biz Can't Ship to the EU Anymore
Small datapoint for me as a non-business entity going the opposite direction. I sell vinyls on Discogs and the last time someone purchased a vinyl from the US I was told I am classed as a business so I had to sign up with some private business which was a customs clearing company. They charged a flat fee and then a daily $1 charge for the entire time the parcel was in flight. I also had to do extremely strict business identity verification, which I obviously couldn't do as an individual.

It's such a mess of a situation.

3stacks··on Nobody pays for FOSS, we can force them to
I don't understand why anyone takes this person seriously. He fell ass-backwards into a prominent company, got demoted after proving incapable of being the CTO, and then seemingly got promptly off-boarded after the acquisition and now just has a developer relations job. Not to denigrate that role, but it doesn't exactly confer authority for this to be the trajectory of your career.

It's fascinating to look up the etymology of words and see how it looks in Dutch. I find Afrikaans to be much closer to English than Dutch or German (which I previously learned). Do you find Afrikaans comprehensible?

Sorry, I missed your reply. It's a very small project by a friend of mine so I'm not surprised it doesn't get a lot of love: http://github.com/brycehans/toolgate

I really appreciate the flexibility of the rules. For example I have it auto-approve `aws` cli operations when using a read-only --profile flag, but have it always ask for a privileged profile

3stacks··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster
I just need to post one banger Sam Altman tweet and I'll be sorted lol
3stacks··on Leaving Proton Mail
Maybe so, but I just assume anything I write is being read by multiple different parties anyway. I use Signal too, but I don't trust that either. Face-to-face communication (inside my portable lead chamber) is the way to go
3stacks··on Australia 'on the same page' as Canada as it seeks deeper EU alliance
More people leads to more competition in the job market and housing space. There's no universe in which they are not linked. It's a natural consequence of near 20% population growth in a decade
3stacks··on Gemini 3.8 Live and 3.8 Live Extended Thinking
My father-in-law was saying the same thing about Gemini 12 months ago regarding the Afrikaans speech. I've tried a few of them in my studies but none of them could seem to switch between English/Afrikaans except Gemini. It's an interesting time to be a language learner

As jy wil, ons kan saam praat op Discord :) maar my Afrikaans is sleg

3stacks··on Leaving Proton Mail
An additional factor for me leaving was the board member (Rosemary Leith) who was part of the WEF. It seems to me that Proton has been co-opted
3stacks··on Leaving Proton Mail
I also made this switch a year ago, in part because I'm Australian and so is Fastmail. I miss some of the Proton bells and whistles, and my visionary plan had some great inclusions, but Fastmail is great. I just use the web app on my graphene phone and it works fine
3stacks··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
Very nice idea, especially considering the huge price tag on Super Grok Heavy and Cursor Ultra. I'll be monitoring the situation
3stacks··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster
I don't even have a downvote button. Is it "flag"?
3stacks··on Hot coffee could cause oesophageal cancer
I did biomed in uni 10 years ago and they did indeed speak about this as a risk factor in my clinical microbiology class.

I assumed that was what gave my dad throat cancer because he was always gulping down hot coffee but the cause was something else in the end.

3stacks··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer
What I find strange is that it uses different prose in different contexts. It's absolutely insufferable in a general claude-code session, but then I got Opus to annotate a non-disclosure agreement and it uses very clear legal language. I was wondering how I could get it to speak like that all the time
3stacks··on Coop – Isolated VM Environments for Running Claude Code and Codex
Oh awesome, I just started building something like this but nice to use something off the shelf for once.

I used a project called toolgate to autoapprove "safe" tool calls but request permission on riskier calls declaratively. But there's so many unnecessary tool permission requests

3stacks··on Ponytail: Lazy Senior Engineer Skill
That's my mistake, and here's the honest take:

A genuinely simple codebase is table stakes for a project like this.

3stacks··on GOP issues stark warning to AI companies
"John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it!"

TBF I think most people in power are very comfortable with the profitable arrangement they have, so I don't see many/any of them going along with a revolutionary plan (unless they would end up in prison otherwise). Is it really worth the hassle if you can just stay in office and end up a multi-millionaire via inside trading? Let the populous deal with the real world

3stacks··on I launched on Product Hunt and all I got was spam email
That's interesting, when I was preparing to launch I saw an app with the same concept where startups "buy" their country on a world map. Some of the countries like Norway were "premium countries" so they cost extra for placement. I doubt anyone will think of that site in a couple of weeks. I thought it was kind of novel but I've now seen a couple more that are just blatant cash grabs like that.

How is your Chrome extension going these days?

3stacks··on I launched on Product Hunt and all I got was spam email
It does kind of feel "dead internet" to me
3stacks··on git git git git git
Its a weird feeling to see something posted on here and remembering it being posted nearly 10 years ago

I think of this every time I write git git status

3stacks··on Taxi drivers rarely die of Alzheimer's
Purely anecdotal, but I experimented with getting rid of my phone entirely for 6 months (using VoIP on my laptop for calls and text), which meant I had to plan my route ahead of time using online maps (OsmAnd). I found that my short-term memory improved noticeably and I could easily recall 10 digit numbers I just saw briefly.

uThermal has been documenting in shorts the myriad game breaking bugs introduced into StarCraft 2 in recent patches. The game was super stable for 15 years and now you can load 8 sieged tanks into a medivac at a time. Anyway I am seeing the same thing as you in many different arenas
3stacks··on Australian energy retailers must offer three hours of free daytime electricity
They've already burned at least $15bn on that disastrous Snowy Hydro "battery" project... Could've just rolled out consumer batteries on a large scale instead.
3stacks··on Please don't discontinue Gemini 2.5 Flash
How does it compare cost-wise for you?
3stacks··on Men's average testosterone levels have halved in last 50 years
Good point. Age and obesity are the strongest correlates with low testosterone. Increases in sedentary lifestyles probably aren't helpful either, but not clear if that is anything other than a proxy for obesity
3stacks··on Amazon has enough satellites to launch its Starlink competitor
My little hamlet is 40km (~25 miles) from the nearest established town and it’s nothing but state forest between so it will never be economical to run fibre.

The typical solution is called Fixed Wireless which is essentially the same as 5G or traditional satellite internet.

I’ve used Starlink for years and aside from the exorbitant price I wouldn’t consider switching. The dish is very low voltage so I have a failover system for during power outages to keep my server and work connection going.

Space junk aside I’m glad to see Space X being challenged because some downward pressure on price would be nice
