Beacon | Senior Full-Stack Javascript Engineer | London (Shoreditch) - ONSITE | Full Time | £70,000 | https://www.beaconcrm.org

At Beacon we're building the best nonprofit-focused CRM in the world. We believe passionately in the power of technology to make a difference.

Innovative charities around the world trust Beacon to run their core technology infrastructure. Animal welfare, human rights, disaster relief, cancer support - all powered by Beacon.

We're a social enterprise and have doing good at the core of our mission. We're also profitable, privately owned, and our goals are for long term sustainable growth rather than a quick exit.

We're looking for a great Full-Stack Javascript Engineer who can help us to design and build our world-class product for modern charities.

Our technology stack is built entirely around JavaScript running on AWS. The front-end web app is built with React and Redux. Beacon's back-end infrastructure is based around microservices running on AWS Lambda, making Beacon the world's first serverless CRM.

Tray.io | Solutions Engineer | London - ONSITE | Full Time

We are an ambitious and well funded startup looking for top engineering talent to make connecting software services a breeze. Many software services we use every day are distinctly separate and difficult to use together - we intend to fix that.

Your role as a Solutions Engineer will involve extending the tray.io integration platform through the implementation of 3rd party “connectors”. Connectors are wrappers around REST APIs which allow data to be sent in and out of the tray.io platform. Your role will involve quickly understanding how any given SaaS tool works and how to use its API.

You will:

- Design, implement, test, and maintain connectors

- Work with 3rd parties and customers to establish your developer access to their APIs

- Contribute to the design and development of our internal tools for building connectors

Requirements:

- Experience with REST APIs

- Knowledge of a number of different SaaS tools

- Experience writing Javascript (ideally Node.js)

- Excellent communication skills

- Ability to think outside the box

- The desire to learn, improve and work within a close knit team

500and4··on Ask HN: What are some of the best job boards you have seen (any industry)?
http://zonino.co.uk - We had a stab at building our own that mined jobs directly from the websites of (London) startups. It's mothballed so the data is all out of date but I still think the UI is a good example of how job searching should be really simple and uncluttered.

500and4··on Show HN: Startup Jobs for Developers
This is really good! Love the clean style. We tried to do something similar a while ago with http://www.zonino.co.uk although we scraped the jobs from startups sites which works quite nicely. Haven't updated for a ages though. You could consider doing something similar. I echo the comments about location filters! Please make that a priority!
500and4··on Show me the salary!
I couldn't agree more. If we want more transparency from employers we (as engineers) should start with being transparent with each other. I had no idea that legislation existed in the US - that's really interesting!
500and4··on Show me the salary!
I would argue that in London it's the fact that talking about salaries is considered rather taboo in tech that perpetuates non-disclosure. I wrote a post about it a while ago: http://blog.zonino.co.uk/on-salaries-in-london-startups/
500and4··on Show HN: Workshape.io – A talent matching service for developers in Startups
Nice idea and really well executed. I run http://www.zonino.co.uk with a couple of other chaps and we think similarly about the need to bypass recruiters. Get in touch if you'd like to have a chat about the wild London startup scene!
500and4··on Show HN: RemoteCoder.io – A jobsite for remote programmers
I think you've hit the nail on the head here. We've had a similar experience building http://www.zonino.co.uk. Plenty of interest from employers but without the traffic it's hard to justify charging. This is where sites like Stackoverflow really stand out because they already have a flow of relevant and highly engaged traffic.
500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
That's really interesting, thanks!
500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
Seems that you're right. I'll look into it!
500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
I think there's something fundamentally strange about the UK and the startup scene in particular where it's considered poor form to discuss salaries. Startups are unwilling to be up front about it and engineers are reluctant to discuss it with each other. I think each of those things feeds the other and we end up with a lack of transparency that is as much cultural as anything else.
500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
Will do!
500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
Good spot, thanks! That pesky 'job' won't be bothering anyone any more...
500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
Thanks for the kind words and good observations!

What we set out to try and do was to build something that didn't rely on companies posting their jobs. Free tech job boards are a dime a dozen. We wanted this to be an up to date account of the jobs that are available as a useful tool to job seekers. That said, you make a really good point about building a client API and I think that's the route we should go: Seed the site with scraped stuff but enable companies to upload their jobs, too.

I totally agree about applications being a nightmare. Some systems are starting to simplify this but it would be great if there was some standard for it. That's something we've talked about, too and we think would be useful. But this actually requires getting startups on board which will take time - but hopefully a few mavericks will want to join in!

500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
You're right - maybe it's best to turn off SoundCloud until the site can handle other cities/countries properly!
500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
More locations coming soon! London is just an easy place to start because we live here and know some people at various startups here.
500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
OneFineStay's site is a bit of a thorn in my side... But I'm working on it!
500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
I've had a really positive experience working for a startup. I was the first engineer hired and it's been amazing to see a company grow from 4 founders to over 100 people. Naturally I'm biased because it all worked out splendidly but I'm really really glad I did it. Sure, it's a risk but I think it all boils down to weighing up the risk with how much you think the founders and the business can succeed.

I think engineers are in a better position now that the London startup scene has matured as there is no stigma attached to being a part of a startup that didn't work out. I think a lot of employers value those experiences and the lessons learned!

500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
Sweet, I'll pop it the list. Thanks!
500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
Hey, thanks. I've deactivated that job and I'll fix it up later. Really appreciate the heads-up!
500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
I think you're exactly right about SMR. Haven't tried mining the HN lists yet, but that kind of seemed like cheating! All of these jobs come straight from the startups' own sites.
500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
London based companies who are hiring in other countries are a real ballache. You think New York is tricky - Ustwo are hiring in Malmö, too (http://zonino.co.uk/job/1132). And I can't even point at Malmö on a map.

All joking aside we decided not to try to filter out jobs in other countries because knowing where a startup is hiring might actually be interesting or useful. We're hoping to improve how the site handles different locations soon.

500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
Good spot. We've ended up playing a little fast and loose with the definition. Dennis made the cut because we've seen them at silicon milkroundabout (https://www.siliconmilkroundabout.com/) but by that definition we'd let the BBC in, too. Should probably tighten it up - not sure the likes of Ocado really qualify, either.
500and4··on Zonino – A project to automatically find every job at a startup in London
Yeah, the search can be a little bit precious sometimes if you don't pick one of the pre-defined skills. Need to work on that. For now this should do the trick: http://zonino.co.uk/search?q%5B%5D=Node.js
