7ero··on Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War
Sound like they're following the google playbook, don't be evil, until the shareholders tell you to.

7ero··on Bitcoin and the dangerous fantasy of ‘apolitical’ money (2013)
I've always wondered why bitcoin maximalist would want to live in a world run by the person who owns the most bitcoin.

7ero··on Is there a wider internet outage today?
Not sure if this would cause larger regional harm, but anecdotally there were issues connecting to our US east VPN at work.

Is this a low key plug for Quantum Computing Since Democritus?
7ero··on Has HN Changed? I assume it's just me
I'm feeling the same way, I'm thinking it has to do with the amount of people wanting to have a career in tech (including the non-technical folks, business-types and such), the ease of sharing information online, and the notoriety of ycombinator in the startup space.
7ero··on Stanford just released a 386-page report on the state of AI
> Chinese citizens have the most positive view of AI products and services, while Americans are more skeptical.

Is there a cultural reason for this?

7ero··on Apple is rebuilding Maps from the ground up
One of my gripes with iOS is the ability to select a default maps app. It bothers me that when I try to share my location through iMessage, it forces me to view the information by opening apple maps and you cannot copy and paste the location into another mapping app. I believe this was a terrible strategy to get users to use apple maps.
7ero··on Introducing A16Z Crypto
Venezuelans mining bitcoin isn't a good way to solve their inflation issues, because bitcoin has lost its value much faster than the the Venezuelan Bolivar has lost value, at least the bolivar is significantly less volatile than bitcoin. That doesn't mean bitcoin can't be stable though.
7ero··on Wall Street rethinks blockchain projects as euphoria meets reality
I think Conway's law is something important to note in this context, where there are benefits to running centralized businesses over decentralized (ie communication). Decentralized communication between people is a problem itself, namely, decentralized decision making and the speed at which decision are made.
7ero··on Statement on Potentially Unlawful Online Platforms for Trading Digital Assets
The whole regulatory framework behind cryptocurrency is a mess. IRS classifies cryptocurrencies as a property, while SEC classifies some as a security. Which only makes it harder to regulate. Problems like these need to be solve in order to help the ecosystem mature in a sustainable way.
7ero··on LSD is 'harmonizing' for the brain – and can change your personality for years
Placebo LSD? How would that work?
7ero··on Dtube – A decentralized video platform using STEEM and IPFS
Most likely, it will. But since it's decentralized, it would be hard to enforce copyright.
7ero··on Ask HN: I'm writing a book about white-collar drug use, including tech sector
This isn't me. But there is Paul Erdős, who made great contributions to mathematics. He was known to use amphetamines regularly. He even made a bet with one of his colleagues on his amphetamine use, betting that he could give up amphetamines for a month. In which he ended up subsequently winning but complained that mathematics was set back by one month.
7ero··on The quantum internet has arrived (and it hasn’t)
I'm a bit confused by the process of entangling photons emitted by two distinct qubits, wouldn't entangling those photons affect the state of the two original distinct qubits? Or is that simply how entanglement works?
7ero··on The 'Self Drive' Act puts America on the road to reducing congestion
Sure, if we accept the idea that traffic congestion increases, but I don't think that it will be the biggest problem because with current forms of congestion it becomes frustrating because you have to pay attention to the road and operate the car, while alternatively with a SDC, that'll no longer be the case and can actively engage in productive activities (or not).

I suppose there are other arguments to this; Maybe time critical events such as emergency vehicles attempting to reach a destination, but there's probably a solution to this...

7ero··on Uber Fires Anthony Levandowski
At this point, I think this is a move to slow Uber's entry into the market, there is probably irrevocable damage because I would imagine it's hard to prevent their IP from being used.

I wonder how things would have played out if Otto was never acquired.

7ero··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Project: Building a custom email service allowing users to send emails from their own domains, looking into eventually reinventing the modern modern email UI.

I wanted to originally create my own private email server, but realize I had the option to allow others to use this. I also got really frustrated with the current way email UI worked so I'm working on revamping the UI to something more modern.
