8note··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
doesnt work as of today
8note··on MicroZig to Adopt Strict No LLM / No AI Policy
it is enforceable, just the wrong rule.

the rule is ultimately "dont submit stuff where only your llm session knows whats going on"

if you brainstorm with an llm, then rewrite the llm prose but have no understanding, youve still broken the rule.

if you understand what it suggested, why, and so on, then you do know whats up, and thats unenforceable, but who cares

8note··on MicroZig to Adopt Strict No LLM / No AI Policy
i think its probably asking people to not submit things they dont understand themselves.

if you want to submit an LLM found bug, you could instead donate the tokens directly to the maintainers, rather than making them read your agent outputs

8note··on Old.reddit.com Gone
it looks like a lot of the functionality of old reddit for seeing not-ad-decided sort orders is going away, so the whole old reddit will probably be gone by the end of the year
8note··on From confession to conspiracy: How the Wedgewood fake polls story spread
i think its more of a face saving lie that mcmorrow dropped out over the twitter poll.

she ruined her campaign by trying to make it about hasan piker, who wasnt running, and a good portion of the people she needed as supporters kinda like piker on at least a surface check of what he has to say.

i think more what happened is all her donors were already out, and they just pointed at that poll. its not like it was a unique poll.

pointing at the fake poll gets her(and her consultants) some cover for having made bad campaign choices

8note··on From confession to conspiracy: How the Wedgewood fake polls story spread
i dont know if this would really count as fraud in that case either - its not like they lied about the results of the primary or anything, just influenced it by convincing people to vote a certain way or drop out.

i think this is more like putting out fake weather reports than fake corn harvest reports.

8note··on From confession to conspiracy: How the Wedgewood fake polls story spread
looks like after his main party dissolved, he was running as a member of the republican party?

this still seems like the republican party trying to do some election fraud against themselves?

8note··on From confession to conspiracy: How the Wedgewood fake polls story spread
there's an implication that the fake poll was also therefore incorrect, but its in line with what real polls showed before and after

... and its months after she tanked her campaign.

you cant really plummet from single digit to single digit polls.

> It's pretty sad that Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, Sequoia etc. are the ones who capture all of this growth and not the public

the public could buy google, m$, nvidia and so on and benefit from that growth, no?

8note··on Cerebras Deploys Trillion-Parameter AI Models
speed gets you to have flow though, rather than breaking your concentration with various waits that aren't actually times where you can stop and think because its 7s surrounded by tiring reading.

a milisecond response, that you can then spend 30s focused on is better.

its the same as a build tool. just slow enough build tools really suck, compared to either an instant build or a 30min build

evaluating the areas isnt the same as watching the llm harnes say "thinking" between submitting a request and getting a response

8note··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
because its fun?

why are you here if you dont enjoy the solving of problems first and foremost?

8note··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
if the complaints can be properly pointed at the actual problem - the corporate culture the complainers are actively upholding or the capitalist system at large, id be much more sympathetic

its a tribalism problem, but one of trying to uphold the current tribe system while theres a pretty obvious new tribe system replacing it

8note··on Pentagon grants DHS permission to test heat ray weapon for use at border
the better option is to stop arming gangs in central and south america, and accept that certain governments will have sovereignty and democracy outside of being a US vassal state.

the secondary better option is to move away from colonial ambitions where those same vassal states exist to give the US their resources, and must be controlled to doing so, into having their own economic prosperity.

half of this strategy has worked well with mexico already, such that a lot of the southern border immigration isnt mexicans anymore, after nafta destroyed the mexican farm industry and moved the corn to iowa

8note··on Pentagon grants DHS permission to test heat ray weapon for use at border
The US has a lot of places that will be heavily affected by climate change, and climate refugees will be travelling within and between states, just as much as across country borders
8note··on Pentagon grants DHS permission to test heat ray weapon for use at border
> Specifically munitions that are considered illegal to deploy in war, but are apparently acceptable to deploy by police?

the reasoning for this is less exciting that you'd like. its illegal in war because war is anarchy, and ypu cant tell what chemical weapons an opponent is using, and so proportional response is the worst variation you can think of.

when theyre used by the cops, you know exactly what they are using, and there isnt a chemical weapon escalation worry

8note··on Pentagon grants DHS permission to test heat ray weapon for use at border
aluminum is pretty eactive though. some bronze chainmail?
8note··on Canadians are running out of time to oppose Bill C-22
electeds? primary threat? i think that might backfire in the canadian senate

i know i voted against the referendum question last week to consider moving to a US inspired elected senate system. i dont think we need that pageantry

8note··on Ask HN: If the models are so good, why doesn't OpenAI just start 100 companies?
i like reading the generated code as a code review, and then i can leave inline comments back to the ai, rather than trying to point the ai to the right lines via chat.

im already practiced at reviewing code through code review tools, so id rather do it that way than in vscode

8note··on Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone
vote with your wallet here is to make a new phone company that uses only these user owned devices.

its not particularly feasible to do for the end customer, similar to trying to buy EVs in the US when the upstream dealer decides whata available for you.

vote with your wallet is for the ultra-wealthy.

the rest of us can vote with our votes instead, and get much better results

> When do people understand that LLMs are no oracles. Just because some LLMs tell you the code is safe or has no backdoor doesn't mean it is true.

if it tells me there is a backdoor, and shows me how its used, i can be pretty sure that there is one though.

if claude cant find the backdoor, chances are that claude cant find a backdoor. its still not an oracle, but that is still useful feedback for updating priors

8note··on Quad9 to exit France
the labourer who built the apartment doesnt get a hundred year claim to economic benefit from that apartment though?

are you saying that electricians should get a monthly rent fee from any circuit theyve touched?

i think we can do just fine treating IP like other work - you pay for the creation of it, not the consumption

8note··on How abliterated models can get you pwned
rather than that, what guarantee do you have that the model does what you want under the conditions you care about?

how do you know you are outside of those conditions?

im not convinced that having the training data and process actually answers the most important questions, because we dont have answers to them.

the rest is great for being able to audit what is there, and being able to play with different variations, but it isnt going to be the same as reading code, then building it, then comparing the build hashes to see that they're the same

8note··on Demographic "doomsday" misses the mark
immigration slips the state controlled school system, which is less than ideal for keeping a cultural consensus. maybe better with more diversity, maybe not
8note··on Ofcom concedes defeat in 4chan case
its the exact same as the US vis a vis tiktok as well
8note··on Ofcom concedes defeat in 4chan case
maduro definitely wasnt breaking venesuelan law, as a clearer example, nor is Brazil's non-visa/mastercard payments system
8note··on Ofcom concedes defeat in 4chan case
huh? the case here is the UK trying to get the US to enforce some UK law in the US
8note··on Ofcom concedes defeat in 4chan case
> Somehow that implies that foreign companies should be able to reach into the US and bug people in the US not doing anything in their own country?

well yeah. whats good for the goose is good for the gander. if the US wants to go bug people in their own countries, even going so far as to murder a bunch of people to kidnap a sitting president of a country, youre gonna get others looking to do it in response, and as the US loses its privileged position on the world stage, its gonna have to start complying

8note··on Why do we have so many meetings?
steamed broccoli is great though. i think a lot of people overcook it at which point it switches from great to disgusting, but maybe its also a parsley/cilantro type deal where some people taste certain things as being extremely similar to piss?
8note··on Why do we have so many meetings?
why have review or ownership at all? git bisect and page the cause automatically

but also, you arent really blcoked on anyones review. just open a fork of their service and run a copy on your own team
