Dell laptop hardware doesn't really match MBP hardware - objectively.

Apple will be head and shoulders better than the Samsung display - it just costs more than you feel like it should.

I remember reading an account of a number of intelligencia taking over a factory shortly after the Soviet revolution after it was nationalized and they got super dialed in an productivity shot up. The factory ran like a swiss watch.

It took nearly a year for things to regress. Bad actors started taking plum positions and the actual intellectuals didn't really want to be working in a factory long term and then there was the question of who got the benefits of this success.

It was fascinating though how heady it was for that first year when everybody was highly aligned and working smartly and in unison.

Oh you should try the accessibility feature for that with the little dots on the screen.
AdamN··on The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI
Reminds me of my wife chatting with this guy at a party and we were complaining about money problems and she says this proverb she had learned recently and said, "a man is rich if he has two hands".

Turns out the other person was Albie Sachs who was a hero and had his hand blown off during the apartheid era and took both arms out of his pockets and raised them up and said "I guess I'm not rich then" - that was some serious gallows humor :-)

Price crashes, builders go bankrupt, price oscillates heavily, pace of improvement goes way down.
AdamN··on Keyboard differences between Windows and Macs
Nice! Then you might really like ctrl+k. Go to the middle of the line and it will delete everything from the cursor to the end of the line.

Also Option and the right and left arrows to move from one word to the next. I don't really use this one much though

AdamN··on Keyboard differences between Windows and Macs
For those ctrl+a and ctrl+e are the way to go.
AdamN··on Keyboard differences between Windows and Macs
The carriage return is moving the typehead to the beginning of the line, not starting a new one.

Line feed is the command that is incrementing to the new line.

Those two commands almost always run together so it quickly became possible to invoke with a single CRLF command (in ancient computer times)

AdamN··on Theranos.world
Did we get their emails? Would be interesting to tease out the differences between the Enron culture and the Theranos culture (and similarities)
AdamN··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
I got my eyes checked a few years ago and they were literally using a VT100 interface. The person knew the keyboard interface like the back of his hand and it was so much faster than a mouse-based GUI that is so prevalent.
AdamN··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
I doubt that's a big blocker - the keyboard is one of the selling points and I'm guessing that you could just have 2 keyboards if you really wanted to (the Bloomberg one for auth and the other one for longform typing??)

Drop them like a brick is overblown. The US defended Taiwan long before TSMC became singular and will continue to even if SOTA is available elsewhere. Of course Taiwan is smart enough to know that the US isn't a monolithic decision-maker and just having companies like Apple on your side inside the US administration is important for long term security.

Yeah that's what I said.
AdamN··on Gemini 4 Argon
This is classic innovators dilemma stuff and for sure the Alphabet board is aware of it. It's not an easy problem to solve at scale though.
AdamN··on Gemini 4 Argon
Google said as much shortly after GPT3.5 was released. There is no moat.

With that said, there are some other moats and people are building them: training capacity, inference capacity, brain capacity (literally buying the best researchers and keeping them tied down), harnesses/subscriptions, etc...

AdamN··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
I'd say they're most useful in suburbs. You can charge them overnight in your driveway or garage so there's almost no reason not to have one unless you're really focused on the road trip scenario but that's an issue for city cars too.
AdamN··on Was silent reading unusual during Augustine's time?
What they're getting at is that people aren't able to sit down and digest a moderately challenging book. This is due to attention span, the habit of 'scrolling' vs turning a page, etc... Those people can still 'read' and are literate in a sense.

I would say most of us have this situation already but it's much worse when you look more broadly around. People without an interest in books used to read tabloids which for all their faults were still more edifying then what the TikTok or YouTube shorts algorithms are presenting.

AdamN··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
And without the CHIPS act that would probably be closer to zero.
AdamN··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
You're right - I was a little too fast looking it up. I was basing it off of the interview for the Acquired podcast which was awesome.
AdamN··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Aren't basically all high tech companies the inheritors of basic research funded by highly developed countries?

ASML is definitely a fully globalist enterprise.

AdamN··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
They're making the point that you're wrong. The CHIPS act under Biden is a big subsidy to bring modern fabs to the US and without it there wouldn't be any orders in the US either (which has less regulation). The EU came up with a competitor to that subsidy but it wasn't generous enough to compete (neither regulation nor bureaucracy at play here).

On a side note, none of the TSMC fabs in the US are cutting edge. They're all at least a generation behind.

AdamN··on The Copilot+ PC brand is dead
For testing? Why would a tech person buy one of these?
AdamN··on ASML currently sells no chipmaking machines in Europe, executive says
Most of their fabs are also in Taiwan.
AdamN··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Another interesting fact is that Che-Chia Wei (the man who made TSMC what it is) received zero equity. Everything he has he bought himself at the market rate.

12.4% of the world is illiterate and I'd guess more like 20% would have trouble quickly taking text and turning that into instructions faster than a video could do the same thing.

To me it's more about the funders staying engaged. For the people working in the startup as long as it's exciting and you're getting paid enough it seems really fun to get that much runway - why would you leave unless there are personality/direction conflicts??
