Akronymus··on Much Ado About None: Sentinel Values in Python
Maybe a different example works better for your mental model:

A user can set custom settings, and those settings may or may not have a value assigned to them. For example, one setting is optimization level, another option is a debug flag.

You want to have a unified interface to get information about settings, queried through some intermediate system. (lets just say it is limited to querying specific settings, rather than getting the entire list, due to legacy constraints in this case) Because for some settings you just care about them existing and for others you care about the actual value, you have to differentiate between a setting that contains something, a setting that contains nothing, and one that doesnt exist.

Akronymus··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
I know a few latinos, they absolutely loathe latinx. They treat it almost equally to chink, even. Doesnt help that latinx is pretty hard to pronounce for them.

> Woke 1 was absolutely crazy.

That feels like the covid amnesty thing to me. Say the previous "version" of x was insane and we should just blanket forgive and forget about it. Kind of a rejecting all responsibility.

(besides, i dont think there is a woke 1/2 in the first place IMO)

Akronymus··on MS Paint Adds Freeform Rotation (2026)
i used to use mspaint for its lack of anti aliasing. Then they added it and wouldnt let you disable it.

Anyways, much happier now that I no longer use it.

Akronymus··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
> The real mistake was to connect such food critical equipment to the internet. I don't know who dared to do that, this has been part of the common knowledge for a while now.

Ive got to disagree there, the mistake is in it not being readonly accessible. Monitoring fridges in such a setting is one of the few times it actually does make sense to put online readonly.

Akronymus··on I posted to HN, and then my website was flooded with AI bot traffic
make interactions with others' posts/post others' stuff a soft req for posting your own stuff? So not following it could be deemed actionable by the hn mod team?

Edit: nvm thats already in the guidelines

Akronymus··on Forever Junior: The Skills AI Can't Develop for You
I was more concerned about supply chain attacks, along with the idea of stripping down all dependencies to truly just what you need.

Need a few math operations? pull those in, instead of an entire math lib, for example.

Akronymus··on Forever junior: Skills AI can't develop for you
Also, your own library, at this point, is much less of an attack vector than some dependency from a package manager

Yeah I wasn't sure of the actual threshold (I kinda just lucked into a lot of karma early on because of a post about factorio releasing 1.0)

Akronymus··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
weirdly enough that reminds me of wattpad and ao3, where wattpad uses much nicer sounding terms while ao3 uses as accurate terms as possible. (which makes ao3 seem more "degenerate")
Akronymus··on How Hacker News ranking works: scoring, controversy, and penalties (2013)
> Do you think that the math is irrelevant now that the audience itself has become so woke that it’s basically an echochamber?

I do very much believe that that is your own cognitive biases at work. While it certainly feels like there is a slant in a certain direction to me, I do see plenty of dissenting opinions from that perceived slant that get pretty much as much visbility. Most discourse here IS civil, too, which permits those dissents.

If you do believe that there is bad faith discourse going on, you can always email the mod team to get that sorted out.

Akronymus··on People Who Can't Picture Anything Are Rewriting the Science of Imagination
yeah looks like it triggered a keyword filter to mark it as dead to me. Or a few people flagged it.

Either way it seemed relevant enough to me that I vouched for it.

do you have inner music or just your voice serving as the instrument like me?

> Practically, it means I'm rubbish at remembering people. I've developed some techniques that help, but if someone changes their look significantly, it's very hard for me to identify that it's the same person.

Do you perhaps have a mild form of face blindness?

Akronymus··on People who can't picture anything are rewriting the science of imagination
> Engineering types most commonly are strong in conceptual thinking. You can imagine complex systems and how they connect but it’s hard to describe and linearize this into words. You have to translate. Again it’s sort of an imagined picture but not really.

I guess I have that ability, in that I can relatively easily figure out spatial relations or can map out code mentally. The photorealism I am a 0 on.

Is linear thinking just a stream of conciousness thing where you basically list attributes? If so then I guess I have that too.

But id still describe myself as an aphant.

Akronymus··on People Who Can't Picture Anything Are Rewriting the Science of Imagination
the only internal sense I have is my own voice. I cant even "imagine" music but rather hum it in my own voice at best. Same with others' voices
Akronymus··on Linux Zoom client proactively reading everything written to X11 clipboard
I have a few scripts that interact with wl-copy. Like one that just cats all the files in a directory and pipes it into wl-copy so I can paste it somewhere else. Something like that would've been immensly useful when I was still on windows, but that would've been too much a bother to set up.
