Alekhine··on Ask HN: Niches Underserved by Programmers?
Underserved how? What software do they use that could be improved?
Alekhine··on [dead]
It is a purely ideological fork. Some people really didn't like that the Godot twitter account was posting explicitly leftist games (gamedevs with leftist politics? what a shock.) and then they started harassing the devs on github, got blocked, and then forked the engine. It's embarrassing that this is near the top of HN.
Alekhine··on Flaubert's letters are as hilarious and humane as his best fiction
I'm not. Texting as a form does not lend itself to the kind of high thought letterwriting does.
Alekhine··on Randolph Bourne
Bought a collection of his essays recently.
Alekhine··on Ask HN: Released games built on FOSS engines?
Cruelty Squad. Made with Godot.
Alekhine··on Wavacity – a FOSS port of Audacity to the web
I mean, that was kind of the idea behind the JVM, wasn't it? It's not a terrible idea.
Alekhine··on Show HN: I automated half of my typing
What editor are you using to do this? I assume it's vim or emacs.
Alekhine··on Microsoft is using malware-like pop-ups in Win11 to get people to ditch Chrome
For certain games it's still borked. Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines is among my favorites and it's unplayable.
Alekhine··on Ask HN: What's the biggest red flag you've encountered during a hiring process?
Not the OP, but it's extremely rude and unprofessional. Nitpicking a guy's college transcripts from 20 years ago? Come the fuck on. His experience and skills should have been enough, asking those dumbass questions is an insult, one that he didn't have to take.
Alekhine··on Twitter has officially changed its logo to ‘X’
January 6th.
Alekhine··on The Military Recruiting Crisis: Even Veterans Don’t Want Their Children to Join
The article you post just says some gen z were able to take advantage of low mortgage rates in 2020. And in cheaper parts of the country. It doesn't mean anything for the overall socioeconomic condition
Alekhine··on Try: run a command and inspect its effects before changing your live system
No, it doesn't. It just sends 1 ECHO_REQUEST packet. If this was sarcasm I could not detect it
Alekhine··on PostgreSQL reconsiders its process-based model
I have no idea why that isn't standard practice in every codebase. I should be able to figure out your code without having to ask, or dig through issues or commit messages. Just tell me what it's for!
Alekhine··on Modern Life Is Rubbish: Tao Lin’s Taipei (2013)
The author is a woman.
Alekhine··on OpenMW: Open-source TES3: Morrowind reimplementation
Part of the fun is figuring it out yourself. It can feel oppressive at times, but I personally really enjoyed it.
Alekhine··on Growing Up Alyssa
Asking to not be oppressed is a manifesto?
Alekhine··on Toronto restaurant caters to neurodivergent diners
It's a catch-all term for people who are not mentally ill, but have different neurological characteristics from the norm. The most obvious example is autistics, but this would also include ADHD, people with sensory issues, etc.
Alekhine··on Classic fountain pens
It may interest you to know that Noodler's, as far as I know, is a one man operation. It's literally one guy making ink in his shed.
Alekhine··on Why human societies developed so little during 300k years
That's not the author of the post. That's a scientist the the post is about.
Alekhine··on Meta is building a decentralized, text-based social network
Also don't see how it's possible. EEE relies on permissive licensing, which lets you make a better, proprietary version that everybody switches to. Mastodon is AGPL. I suppose if Meta built a competitor that was so great it killed all the Mastodon servers... But thats not going to happen. Perhaps if they built an activityPub platform, then disabled federation when they got enough users? Doubt that would work either.
Alekhine··on The Determinate Nix Installer
I'm on Fedora and had to turn SELinux off to get nix to work properly.
Alekhine··on Rope (data structure)
Helix uses ropes for strings. Supposedly it's well suited to lots of little edits. I've been meaning to dive into the code, but all the issues marked 'good first issue' already have a PR waiting to be merged.
Alekhine··on Why Cassettes?
This comment section is odd. Lot of people talking about how kids today can't swap music at school. They can, its called Spotify. Its not perfect, but thats what the vast majority of kids do, they dont go out and buy expensive equipment just for aesthetics.
Alekhine··on Valve is paying open source developers to keep Steam Deck playable
Night and fucking day, my friend.
Alekhine··on Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2022?
I recently had an idea for a spellcrafter game that uses forth. check back in several years?
Alekhine··on Porting Doom to the 3D0 Console
My personal interest would be in reading assembly for the sake of reverse engineering. So, maybe 6502 is not the best option for me. I'll take a look at those books, thanks.
Alekhine··on Porting Doom to the 3D0 Console
How do I do that? I know about easy6502 but what other projects could I start with?
Alekhine··on Neuromancer: Miles Teller Eyed for New Apple+ Sci-Fi Series
I always read it as the color of a blank screen. A glassy black with just the barest shimmer.
Alekhine··on Tales of the M1 GPU
Try being a woman.
Alekhine··on Ask HN: Commit suicide (in terms of family time)
'Nugatory' is a new one for me.
