In this time of rapid change in our society, I like to take time to reflect on the vast changes that have happened in history. I revisit a trip down market street every so often just to observe the people in that time, living their lives in such a different way (but many similar things too), with change happening all around them. I just wanted to share.

So this is a good point. I didn't intend for any analytics or inferences to be made with this map, but indeed it seems that density of urban regions is correlated with density of crashes, which isn't too surprising. I wouldn't go as far to say that denser routes are correlated, since the Trans-Atlantic routes are busy but don't have many crashes, as most crashes happen in the terminal environment as opposed to the enroute environment. I could build some analytics tooling on crashes to determine where outliers occur in terms of geographical location (eg. we'd probably expect more crashes in mountainous regions compared to traffic density), so thanks for the idea!

As a pilot and map nerd, I thought it would be cool to map out the major crashes, and find some new ones too. Used a coding agent to scrape wikipedia and make the map.

A bit unrelated to the Belgium story but I recently visited Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant near San Luis Obispo, CA and learned a ton about the technical details, safety systems, and policy decisions that go into operating a nuclear power plant. When operating at full capacity, it provides up to 10% of California power! While there is certainly always more such facilities can do for safety and efficiency, my impression is that smart people are working hard to ensure the lessons of previous disasters and potential future ones are mitigated, and that nuclear energy, whether through next-gen small module reactors or legacy systems, will be an important aspect of our future energy grid, especially with the rapidly rising energy demand predicted over the next two decades. In my experience, these forecasts are really good 5-7 days out, and then degrade in reliability (as you would expect from predictions of chaotic systems). The apps that show you a rain cloud and a percentage number are always terrible in my experience for some reason, even if the origin of the data is the same. I'm not sure why that might be.

I agree that regulatory compliance and industries around that can often be theater and it creates regulatory barriers that inhibit startups and competition generally but there must be some method of oversight to ensure that people can trust a system or company without needing to see the internals. For example, we trust our food is healthy because the firm that made it is authorized to do so by the FDA as they comply with the rules established by those regulators. Obviously there are flaws, loopholes, etc, and obviously software is different than health but to an extent we want some guarantees from an externally trusted actor. What is needed in the current SOC2 world that might solve some of the issues you outlined without getting rid of it, or the idea of it, entirely?
