AlgorithmicTime··on When Kodak and Polaroid went to war
> dead industry with the last indoor mall built in the US in 2006

Well that's straight up false.

The American Dream mall in East Rutherford, NJ opened in 2019.

AlgorithmicTime··on Carmakers Will Give Your Location to Police Without a Warrant, Senators Say
Literally the entire population of New Jersey would revolt. Everyone's doing a minimum of 10 over unless there's traffic.
AlgorithmicTime··on Science fiction and the death of the sun
Luna 9 used an airbag system, not a soft landing system.
AlgorithmicTime··on Can We Just Throw in the Towel on Airport Security Theater Already?
I don't think most TSA employees are vets... I'm a veteran and it's relatively easy to identify a fellow vet most of the time.
AlgorithmicTime··on SpaceX discloses cause of Starship anomalies as it clears an FAA hurdle
Half the point of special forces is to be covert, which is made hard when your transportation is a giant rocket streaking through the suborbital zone.
AlgorithmicTime··on SSDs have become fast, except in the cloud
> SSDs in the cloud are attached over a network, and fundamentally have to be.

No they don't. I work for a cloud provider and I can guarantee that your SSD is local to your VM.

AlgorithmicTime··on Russian troops use Starlink licensed and imported from Dubai
At the core, it's all military technology. Canned food was invented for Napoleon's Grand Armee.
AlgorithmicTime··on Higher vehicle hoods significantly increase pedestrian deaths, study finds
Some SUVs qualify as trucks under the definitions written into the law.
AlgorithmicTime··on Autophage rocket engine consumes plastic fuselage for fuel
Most fuel mixes for rockets are just Kerosene and Liquid Oxygen, at least in the USA. Seems like most of the next generation are aiming for Methane and LOX.

Burning plastic incompletely would most likely produce more noxious stuff than Kerolox or Methalox engines. Maybe on par with existing Solid Rockets or Hypergolics.

AlgorithmicTime··on US oil lobby launches ad campaign to promote oil as 'vital' to global security
Are they wrong? I would say they're right, oil is in fact vital to global security.
AlgorithmicTime··on The great cousin decline
That's absurdly cheap... I pay about $900/mo per child.
AlgorithmicTime··on Men should abstain from drinking at least three months prior to conceiving
Color me skeptical... people have been drinking for thousands of years. I would be terribly surprised if moderate drinking had a statistically significant effect.

Either way, this is an irresponsible recommendation at a time when birthrates among native populations are falling precipitously. Adding yet another mental/physical hurdle to having kids is the wrong thing to do. Shit, next generation in South Korea will be 40% the size of the current generation with the way things are going.

AlgorithmicTime··on Swedish Tesla strike goes international as Norwegian and Danish unions join in
A strike is between a company and its workers, or maybe an industry and its workers. Postal employees, the fire department, transit employees, they don't work for Tesla.
AlgorithmicTime··on 'Safe' alternatives to engineered stone bench tops may not be so safe: study
They're pretty much in every recently renovated housing unit... not just rich people houses.
AlgorithmicTime··on Eurostar Amsterdam to London trains cancelled for six months
My experience with international trains between the US and Canada is that the customs checks happen on the train.
AlgorithmicTime··on The EPA wants total removal of lead pipes
Jets don’t use leaded aviation gas.
AlgorithmicTime··on Brother have gotten to where they are now by not innovating
That seems absurd. People often have no idea that a product would be useful or desirable beforehand. Perhaps our current level of consumer choice is somewhat absurd, but that brings you to a Soviet style system.
AlgorithmicTime··on FBI Director: FISA Section 702 warrant requirement a 'de facto ban'
Some state and local judges are elected.

The Federal Judiciary is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

AlgorithmicTime··on Living in privately rented homes linked to faster biological ageing, study finds
>Can't pay your rent? That's a crime, and the sheriff will be knocking on your door in 30 days.

What on Earth are you talking about? There was an emergency order during COVID that prevented anyone from being evicted for about two years. A ton of landlords got absolutely screwed because their tenants stopped paying rent and could not be evicted by any means.

AlgorithmicTime··on US sues eBay for allowing sale of emissions defeat devices
Most of those are probably honeypots for the feds.
AlgorithmicTime··on Digression 3: Corrosion – Rust Never Sleeps
I have environmental and health concerns about used motor oil. Cosmoline is specifically formulated for rust prevention and forms a waxy coating, and doesn't have the additives and pollutants motor oil does after being in an engine.
AlgorithmicTime··on Digression 3: Corrosion – Rust Never Sleeps
I mean a gallon can is $90 plus shipping. It's not too bad.
AlgorithmicTime··on Digression 3: Corrosion – Rust Never Sleeps
I've just taken to applying Cosmoline to the underside of my truck each summer.
AlgorithmicTime··on One robber baron’s gamble on railroads
They're not, really, though. US freight rail is remarkably efficient and cheap.
AlgorithmicTime··on Credit card debt collection
Fascism is very specifically about about the subordination of all competing spheres to the State. "All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state."
AlgorithmicTime··on Spain’s Lessons for American Decline
It came from reality.
AlgorithmicTime··on The Development of the M1 Garand and Its Implications
That’s definitely the best price you’re going to find for a serviceable Garand.
AlgorithmicTime··on Why Socialism? (1949)
Which is just as much a pipe dream
AlgorithmicTime··on Odd and unsafe baby car seats from the past
Meanwhile my son is almost 3 and already approaching a size where he legally only needs a booster seat.
AlgorithmicTime··on How the Rich Reap Huge Tax Breaks From Private Nonprofits
Well, fix government oversight of public bureaucracies and then we can have a discussion. As it is now, it's pretty clear that elected officials have little control and oversight into the bureaucracies that they nominally control and direct. Make bureaucrats firable. End Chevron deference. Bring back political appointments from the top to the bottom of the bureaucracy.
