AntiRush··on Virtual and Real World Combine at LAN Party (1998)
What a great read. Thank you for sharing. I didn't go to my first lan party for a couple of years after this was written but it's a nostalgia trip nonetheless.

The linked lanparty.com is also a great exploration. (The first archive is from a few months after the article)

I'm pretty sure my friends and I used this resource when setting up: https://web.archive.org/web/19981202184536/http://www.lanpar...

Your book looks like it will be fascinating! I ordered through bookshop.org since I already have an account, but do you have a preferred retailer for others who might want to buy it?

A3B refers to 3 billion parameters active during a forward pass, not the size of an individual expert.

The 3 billion includes all active experts, and then other shared weights, attention components, embeddings.

In the qwen 3.5 35b a3b series, each expert is ~3 million parameters. There are 40 layers which each have 1 shared expert and 8 routed experts. Roughly 1.1B of the 3B active are experts.

AntiRush··on Run Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B) on consumer hardware (RTX 4090) at 100T/s
Yes, you're correct - bad copy from my notes. 3,111 tok/s is the correct number.

Agreed that glm-5.3-flash is a strong model. On a single 6000 pro you can (barely) fit a q2 quant in vram. I haven't used it extensively, but my initial feeling is that the q2 is quite a bit worse than q4 for this model. To run it comfortably at q4 with reasonable context length you really need 2 6000s.

When the qwen 4 series is released I am hopeful there'll be a strong model with the same architecutre. as qwen3.8-flash-next.

I've been working on support for this model in ds4 on the RTX 6000 pro - it's been really great for my use cases. The ds4 q4 quant performs a lot better than other similar sizes that I've seen.

Using the Q4 quant on an RTX 6000 Pro Workstation Edition at 450 watts:

  Code: prefill 1,251 tok/s decode 255.26 tok/s
  Prose: prefill 1,251 tok/s decode 198.78 tok/s
Most important for me, I can run 4 concurrent streams at 400+ tok/s.

This is likely a convertible debt investment from Amazon being revalued. The numbers are pretty close, there might be some smaller notes in there too.

AntiRush··on Brood War Bench
Back in 2010, during the early days of bwapi, there was a Brood War AI tournament held by the Expressive Intelligence Studio at UC Santa Cruz. It's interesting to see how different the approaches were back then, vs this or Deepmind's SC2 work.

I was reminded of this book today when I read some comments here about the popularity of “sailing log” manuscripts.

This one is written by Paul Lutus, of Apple Writer fame.

Your color correction is incredible - the frames you selected look much better than the original video.

The matrix of vehicles is my favorite part. If you drive down these same streets today it's a sea of black, white and grey.

You'll be happy to know that Les Girls is still there today, advertising burlesque, go go dancers and "full nude". They finally replaced the sign earlier this year, but it still looks very much the same.

Les Girls is the feature of a fascinating podcast, too: https://www.kpbs.org/podcasts/stripper-energy

AntiRush··on Tracy Kidder has died
Agreed. Farmer's O for the P (provide a preferential option for the poor in health care) was clearly central to his life. I think about it often.

On top of that he was incredibly competent at navigating the combination of hostile bureaucracy, apathy, and disorganization. It's incredible what he and PIH accomplished.

AntiRush··on Tracy Kidder has died
The Soul of a New Machine really grabbed me in college. Tracy Kidder wrote with a unique style that (to me) really drives the narrative forward while making you stop and consider the forces behind the story he's telling. The characters he writes about are real people and they seem like it.

Moutains Beyond Mountains[1], another book by Kidder, is even more compelling to me. It's a fascinating story of Paul Farmer, who dedicated his life to fighting infectious disease, especially in Haiti.

AntiRush··on What happened when REM went mainstream
I think you're underestimating the influence of R.E.M. on their peers and those that follow. The first 3 that come to mind:

Nirvana - Cobain famously said "If I could write just a couple of songs as good as what they’ve written".

The National - Toured with, worked with, still bring Michael Stipe onstage every once in a while.

Radiohead - Thom Yorke: "I’ve ripped them off left, right and centre for years and years and years and years."

AntiRush··on Show HN: Free mortgage analysis tool to avoid getting screwed by closing costs
The most common scams around home buying are wire fraud - contact the buyer pretending to be the title company and steal their money. The data in a mortgage is exactly what you need to enable these scams and you're getting people to hand it to you and at the same time tell you they are about to wire money.

Yep, it has the telltale MZ header at the top. Either a DOS or windows executable. [1]

The pdf appears to be a readable formatted version, to get the actual executable you’ll need the raw text sans newlines (as described in the paper)
