AtlasLion··on Apple ranks LAST in USPIRG repairability report
true, but at this point, they are ubiquitous. so mentioning things that they are doing wrong is still valuable.
AtlasLion··on DBOS: A DBMS-oriented Operating System [pdf]
reminds me a lot of IBM OS400.
AtlasLion··on “Zero fucks given” in other languages
not the same but "je m'en bas les couilles" works too.
AtlasLion··on TIL the assumption that string length does not change when upper-cased is false
I was testing this lately,Teradata, SQL server, Oracle and others just return ß for upper('ß'). Snowflake returns SS. There is btw an upper letter defined for ß

AtlasLion··on Snowflake’s response to Databricks’ TPC-DS post
The main question I have for DB is, how good is their query optimiser/compiler? It's fun that you can run some predefined set of queries fast. More important is, how good you can run queries in the real world, with suboptimal data models, layers upon layers of badly written views, CTEs, UDFs... That is what matters in the end. Not some synthetic benchmark based on known queries you can optimise specifically for.
AtlasLion··on Snowflake’s response to Databricks’ TPC-DS post
Their cofounder was behind vectorwise, which kicked ass in benchmarks, but died as no one even heard of it. You can run the benchmark queries fast, that's great, but can you handle code migrated from vertica? Will you optimiser come up with a good plan for queries built on 15 layers of views? That's what companies in the real world have, not some synthetic benchmark that you can make sure you can run for marketing purposes.
AtlasLion··on Snowflake’s response to Databricks’ TPC-DS post
The benchmark itself is kinda useless, so I don't see why they should. If you look at tpc-h for years, you had exasol as a top dog, but in the real world that meant nothing for them.
AtlasLion··on Snowflake’s response to Databricks’ TPC-DS post
That doesn't allow end users any configuration, but this doesn't apply to the company itself which can apply settings from the background on behalf of end users.
AtlasLion··on I Miss Working from the Office
I live in the Netherlands and I have secured an office on "temporary" basis 10 minutes by bike from home. I have 3 huge rooms, internet, water and electricity for a total sum of 250 Euros a month. I'm really enjoying this and I'm not looking forward to commuting 3 hours a day past Vivid.

Re colour accuracy, checkout thinkpads, they even come with a colour calibration sensor so you can have them autocalibrate daily/weekly or whatever suits you.
AtlasLion··on How to revert HP printer’s ban on 3rd-party ink cartridges
I use inkjet printers and I am very satisfied. I am using an Epson printer with what they call EcoTank. Just tanks with different color inks that you can refill yourself.
AtlasLion··on Why is Snowflake so Valuable?
Same applies to Teradata vantage on cloud.
AtlasLion··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
they are human, not a robot you can reset to factory settings. it's only human that people have values that they uphold as the truth and that is hard to change. the place where you immigrate to is not necessarily superior. Immgrants could bring in values that improve their new home country.

AtlasLion··on U.S. Orders Al Jazeera to Register as a Foreign Agent
Our it could be that it really doesn't fit your views on mideast politics. Western media is totally silent on many issue directly caused by western powers in the region.
AtlasLion··on U.S. Orders Al Jazeera to Register as a Foreign Agent
It's by far less biased than any western media company.

AtlasLion··on Zero-sum thinking on immigration will make America poorer
It only does if there are more packages that can be sent or hair that can be cut. With a shrinking population, both are untrue.

But happy instead of spending your life doing something you don't like and dreaming about "escaping the rat race". Success in life is not measured by how much you own.
AtlasLion··on Germany will require all petrol stations to provide electric car charging
Are electric cats more likely to "self ignite" then other cars? I doubt it.

But those tourists are long back home so their numbers are not showing up in the stats of Vegas itself.
AtlasLion··on SARS-CoV-2 was already spreading in France in late December 2019
They already exist, i saw a video on hvac systems used in a moroccan pop-up hospital, air coming in or leaving the building goes through filtration and then through a désinfection machine. They didn't explain the method used though.
