Awelton··on France passes bill to allow police remotely activate phone camera, microphone
They could at least have the decency to just secretly do it and then pretend like they aren't, like our government does. This is why physical switches and removable batteries are the only way forward.
Awelton··on Schumer launches ‘all hands on deck’ push to regulate AI
The sad part is that this very same can be said about 99% of the laws and regulations that are written. He is 73 years old and listening to him speak I don't think he could figure out how to set the clock on a microwave, much less understand the intricacies of the bleeding edge of the most transformative technology to come about in the last 40 years. I very seriously doubt he knows anything besides what is fed to him by the very companies that are to be regulated. Lobbyists write our laws, congress is just there to collect the money from them and plan their insider stock trades accordingly.
Awelton··on Amazon duped millions of consumers into enrolling in Prime, US FTC says
I cancelled since their prices kept getting less and less competitive, and packages were taking a week to show up with "free" "two day" prime shipping. I finally had to report my card as lost to stop them from charging me. Even after I didn't have prime anymore they had the sketchy dark patterns at checkout trying to get you to sign up again so I cancelled my amazon account entirely (which was also a huge pain in the ass that was full of dark patterns). I thought it was going to be a huge pain without amazon as an option but really I haven't missed it. Other companies and even mom & pop stores have really stepped up their online shopping so I have actually had better prices, shipping times, and experiences since quitting amazon. For such a massive corporation the tactics they use are early 2000's satellite TV provider tier. It's embarrassing.
Awelton··on Apple reveals Vision Pro, a AR/VR headset unlike any other
Call me crazy, but I still think VR is just going to be a small niche. It's not a question of who is making it, how much cheaper they can build it, or what PR machine is pushing it. It's just a bad form factor. They are going to keep on trying because strapping ads and trackers directly to people's heads is the big tech wet dream, but I don't think we are looking at the next smartphone by any means.
Awelton··on Ask HN: How much of unlimited PTO do you use?
About 4-5 weeks a year. 'Unlimited' pto is a scummy practice and they wouldn't do it unless it was in their best interest. I have enough to deal with in life without losing sleep over irl dark patterns, so I take off when I feel like I need it. If they don't like that then they should go back to a set number.
Awelton··on YouTube will stop removing false claims of 2020 US election fraud
My philosophy on anything like this, whether it happens to align with my beliefs or not, is that the truth shouldn't fear scrutiny. If a company, government, or person decides to show how right they are by banning dissent then it should be a red flag even if you agree with them on the actual issue. I'm all for self moderation tools so people don't have to see anything they don't want to but I don't need anyone deciding what opinions are 'correct' enough for me to see.
Awelton··on AT&T tries to block Starlink/T-Mobile plan for satellite-to-phone service
Yeah I'm sure hypothetical interference is the reason At&t is shitting their pants over this. If you can't beat them by bettering your own service, drag government roadblocks in front of them. The At&t way.
Awelton··on Logitech Partners with iFixit for Self-Repairs
This seems like a lot of work compared to just putting decent switches in their stuff to begin with.
Awelton··on Show HN: Submit ChatGPT prompts on a web page to mutate the same web page
I had it change to dark mode, then when I asked it to add a tasteful picture of a chicken to the center of the screen and it reverted back to white (sans chicken). Maybe someday I will get my text-to-dark-mode-tasteful-chicken-picture-landing-page generator, but it seems that day is not today.
Awelton··on “We Must Regulate AI,” FTC Chair Khan Says
At the speed the united states government works at whatever regulations they draft will be completely obsolete by the time they are in place.
Awelton··on Grimes Unveils Software to Mimic Her Voice, Offering 50-50 Royalties
Her voice has always been mostly software. 50-50 is probably a better deal than she is getting from her label.
Awelton··on More Americans are using fake license plates
That was my first thought. If I walked outside and saw some douchebag in a paperboy hat writing on my vehicle with a permanent marker I would start throwing rocks at them. The little game of fraud cat and mouse I play is between me and the government.
Awelton··on Are mental health apps better or worse at privacy in 2023?
I wasn't aware that mental health apps were a thing that existed, though I have seen quite a few that have the opposite effect. I always assumed I would be dead and gone before we got to the point where people cried into their electronics in exchange for positive affirmations and pills. I think I have finally done it. I have lived long enough to see the dystopia.
Awelton··on Dating is exhausting, so I let a chatbot flirt for me. Things got weird fast
This was my immediate opinion as well. No doubt they were doing this with a profile picture from 8 years and 20 lbs ago too.
Awelton··on 60 Minutes asked Google CEO: “Have you killed your cash cow?” [video]
Sorry, I just saw this. It's kagi and I love it.
Awelton··on Chromebooks Are Trash (Literally)
My kid goes to a small school and they buy new chromebooks every couple years. Most of them don't make it to that two year mark. I offered to fix some of the broken units for them for free since they don't really have an IT department, but I couldn't get 90% of the parts I needed. The parts I could find weren't justifiable over just buying a whole new chromebook. I guess people will tolerate planned obsolescence as long as the item is not too expensive to replace, but it feels like a huge waste. I wasn't overly excited about my child having a google account either, but at least I got them to let me make a throwaway dummy account for him to use instead of his actual information.
Awelton··on Ubuntu 23.04 – 'Lunar Lobster'
I switched to Arch as soon as ubuntu started pushing snaps and never looked back. Of all the reasons to hate snaps what did it for me was the loopback device spam when trying to list block devices. Canonical has a track record of doing things the community doesn't agree with, carefully reading all the feedback, and then doubling down on whatever terrible idea they had and continuing anyway.
Awelton··on 'Tap-to-pay' charged credit cards through bags, pockets at restaurants, stores
I don't use tap to pay so I decided to do away with that attack vector entirely. If you shine a flashlight through your card you can see where the antenna traces go. One hole punch later and I don't have to worry about it at all. These stories about cards being read from several feet away sound like bullshit. I am more concerned that if I leave my card somewhere it could be picked up and used for several small purchases before hitting the tap to pay limit. We just now got to move past signature based transactions to chip and pin, so why they would immediately add a feature that bypasses the pin is beyond me.
Awelton··on Tell HN: Google search partial outage while rolling out new search?
I have been having hell with sheets and drive all day.
Awelton··on 60 Minutes asked Google CEO: “Have you killed your cash cow?” [video]
I don't know what they are doing. Google search is so bad that people are appending site:reddit.com to every search just to find something that isn't SEO spam, and bard feels like it's from five years ago. Whatever they did to google search a couple years ago was sudden and quite noticeable, so I am not sure why they didn't revert immediately. I guess they thought since they had no real competition they didn't have to worry about it. As soon at it started ignoring my quotation marks in searches so it could continue to feed me pinterest garbage I jumped ship to a paid search engine. As far as bard goes I think it's dead in the water. Nobody wants to use the 4th best LLM on purpose.
Awelton··on Deck.of.cards
I found out that if you add about 60 decks and then hit shuffle it breaks physics, space, and time. I am using it to play solitaire now and it works well.
Awelton··on Animated Drawings
This is a really neat idea. My son got such a kick out of it that he has been drawing new characters for two hours now.
Awelton··on Ask HN: What helps you focus and get things done?
#2 is right on the money for me. I will spend three days failing to get started on something only to wind up being able to do three days worth of work in 5 hours just in time for a deadline. If I can get hyperfocused on something I am an absolute machine, I just can't seem to get that way until I am under the gun. I tried adderall for a month but it worked too well and scared the shit out of me. I am not going to trade a lifetime of popping amphetamines for the ability to labor more efficiently. I wish I could channel it. I feel like I have a superpower that I have no control over. I will try your trick of making myself a person that I want to do things for, and not letting that person get bogged down in minutia. Come to think of it I don't think I have ever even considered being easier on myself. Great post and you have given me a lot to ponder. Perhaps fighting it headfirst for nearly 40 years wasn't the most elegant solution after all.
Awelton··on The Case for Banning Crypto
Crypto and fiat have the same exact downsides. The only difference is in who is getting rich. The federal reserve also creates a currency that is backed by nothing and has an unlimited supply. Bitcoin didn't make groceries 40% more expensive, the 'experts' did.
Awelton··on New buckling spring keyboards re-create IBM’s iconic Model F
After using a model M for so many years the model F feels too light. I am glad to see someone making a new model F for people that want them though. I just bought a Unicomp new model M to keep in a box for the day my original keyboard finally dies. If I had to work in an office with other people I would use something quieter, but since I have a detached home office I can make all the machine gun typing noises I want. I am a firm believer in buckling spring. I am 38 with no signs of RSI.
Awelton··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
A 3d mouse for modeling, and a second ten key on the left side of my 3d mouse so I can enter dimensions while my hand is still on the regular mouse.
Awelton··on “I did not sign this letter” – Yann Lecun
It will be interesting to see how this attempt to re-bottle the genie turns out. Historically it achieves the opposite.
Awelton··on Time to end the speed limit in US airspace?
The low boom aircraft designs are something I haven't seen and are quite interesting. I have been under a few "non low boom" supersonics, and they rattle entire buildings and set off car alarms.
Awelton··on I saw the face of God in a semiconductor factory
I tapped out about halfway. It reads like a college freshman trying desperately to turn the 100 words they have into a 2,000 word essay. There are entire paragraphs that had nothing to do with the story at all.
