Babkock··on Receipt for sale of Jane, age 18, and her son, Henry, age 1
This might be a bold and controversial opinion for Hacker News, but I'll say it anyway: Slavery is wrong.
Babkock··on Can you get root with only a cigarette lighter? (2024)

Wtf? I can't read your blog because I use Qutebrowser?

Babkock··on Nightingale – open-source karaoke app that works with any song on your computer
I just realized a couple weeks ago that the Japanese invented karaoke.
Babkock··on Wanter – A tiny, decentralised tool to explore the small web
Looks cool. Good job!
Babkock··on VW is bringing physical buttons back to the dashboard with the ID. Polo EV
You just feel around for it. Buttons on the steering wheel can be a lifesaver because you don't have to reach down or even look at it, you know what you're doing.
Babkock··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
This "Vienam" sounds like a nice place!
Babkock··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
Billboards are outlawed in Alaska.
Babkock··on Is your electric bill going up? AI is partly to blame
AI has done bad things for humanity. I know, I know, a tough pill to swallow. However will Hacker News users cope with the trauma?? Of knowing... AI... can be bad... sometimes?
Babkock··on The last-ever penny will be minted today in Philadelphia
Some people are poor. Did you know that? Some people live in poverty. I'm sure that is a big surprise to you. Some Americans still have to spend nickels and dimes. Crazy, right? Some people don't have infinite Bitcoin from mommy and daddy.
Babkock··on Magit Is Amazing
Well, yeah. But where's the article? I would like to see more articles about the Emacs-universe.
Babkock··on Autism should not be seen as single condition with one cause, say scientists
Posting this on Hacker News is like contacting a bunch of marine biologists to tell them "water = wet"
Babkock··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
It's not perfect, but considering all the bullshit and misinformation out there about autism spectrum disorder, it's a step in the right direction. I'm sure all of the other autistic people will tell you why it sucks, why it's not good, and nitpick and criticize, but it's fun, it looks cool, and it's decent media representation for a marginalized community that has almost no real representation in media. I don't really like how the goal is to just be a productive worker and exist in society that works against you in every way?

There should be more than 4 meters under "Stats", and one of them is just labeled "???" and goes to 0 for no reason.

Babkock··on The case against social media is stronger than you think
Whaat? You are telling me... Facebook and le Instragram... are not good things for me?
Babkock··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
I'm sorry to say this but I just enjoy the irony of it all. His last words were "Counting or not counting gang violence?". He literally died arguing for less gun control, saying mass violence and death is acceptable. I guess he found out the hard way the consequences of spreading hateful, bigoted, divisive, evil shit. Ben Shapiro cancelled a bunch of his visits to college campuses, I think that's hilarious - I wouldn't shed any tears for him, either.

What if Trump is behind this, and he had him killed to distract from the Epstein files business? He could also blame it on the liberals and the left, and make his own party look like victims.

Babkock··on Launch HN: VibeFlow (YC S25) – Web app generator with visual, editable workflows
Awesome. Really, really awesome. One day no one will actually know how to write code, and no one will be able to fix all this shit.
Babkock··on LandChad, a site dedicated to turning internet peasants into Internet Landlords
Really helpful site from Luke Smith. I would advise anyone interested in web development to check out this page. There's a lot of cool stuff on there.
Babkock··on The “Wow!” signal was likely from extraterrestrial source, and more powerful
Wow!
Babkock··on White Mountain Direttissima
I am the bushwhacker
Babkock··on AOL to discontinue dial-up internet
I was born in 1996, this is like a bedtime story to me. I had AOL as a kid because my family was poor, but I do not remember any of the numbers. Please post more cool stuff like this.
Babkock··on AOL to discontinue dial-up internet
Damn, sounds like internet heaven. You really hit the nail on the head with that modern thing. There's just too many devs out there trying to make the next big thing, the next big trend, to make a name for themselves.
Babkock··on Ask HN: Do you prefer X or Wayland
Been exclusively on Wayland on my laptop and Raspberry Pi for a couple years at least. I've removed almost all of the Xorg packages, but I keep the one xorg-server-xwayland. I don't miss X11 at all. But, I also don't have an NVIDIA graphics card.
Babkock··on Show HN: Play Pokémon to unlock your Wayland session
Also thought this. Never made it that far on the original
Babkock··on Hyprland – An independent, dynamic tiling Wayland compositor
I want to like Hyprland so bad, I'm using it right now. It has its problems, but it is fun to watch the animations and eye candy. I am concerned about the future of the project, seems like it has some scope creep and there is like a subscription model, or something? I don't know how well I understand that, doesn't sound like a good thing though. The website is an eyesore. People pretend it's totally bug-free, but it's just not. Even DistroTube has tried it.

The guy that writes it/maintains it is a piece of shit though. The last thing the Linux community needs is more bigotry and anime crap.

Babkock··on Hyprland – An independent, dynamic tiling Wayland compositor
Hell yeah, I love Niri. I'm excited to watch that project grow and develop.
Babkock··on Show HN: I made a website that makes you cry
You made me cry, you jerk! I just had eye surgery, and you make me watch a dog dying. You'll be hearing from my lawyers!
Babkock··on Denver rent is back to 2022 prices after 20k new units hit the market
How dare your experience differ from mine on the internet. I demand you show me proof of your rent going up, Denver man!
Babkock··on Dwl: Dwm for Wayland
Niri is awesome!
Babkock··on DuckDuckGo now lets you hide AI-generated images in search results
Finally! Now let's do the rest of the internet.
