Bdiem··on In Germany, the use of cash has become a proxy for concerns about trust, privacy
There might be a slight point here, but speaking for me its all about not giving even more data (power) to "the few", that clearly do not wield that data in our interest.
Bdiem··on Germany considers free public transport in fight to banish air pollution
Exactly, apparently the "ÖPNV-Immunisierung" (public transport immunization) was fake news, too. I can report the same experience for Hamburg.
Bdiem··on Cortana is really bad

Bdiem··on The Fireplace Delusion
For everyone living near nothern DE thinking about the transition to the cozy diesel engine http://www.maschinenmuseum-kiel-wik.de runs their submarine diesel engine every 3rd sunday. Spoiler: Loud gets redefined & not especially cozy.
Bdiem··on Ask HN: What habits make a programmer great?
This exactly, but let me add: Develop an urge to understand things. One needs to understand the whole system environment just to be able to make good choices.

To give "urge" more meaning: These days I get a noticeable weird feeling in my gut if I'm working in a environment where there are too many unknowns.

Bdiem··on Ask HN: What was your greatest accomplishment in 2016?
Made an agreement with my employer to work less and I really enjoy my new found spare time / day.
Bdiem··on Tests confirm that Germany's massive nuclear fusion machine really works
Just to clarify: Wendelstein 7-X is a plasma research reactor, never intended to produce energy.

Enlightening (german) podcast about the topic with some of the researchers: https://alternativlos.org/36/

Bdiem··on Which Windows laptop could replace a MacBook Pro?
Which Notebook is a "good" linux machine? All my "linux on NB" experiences so far have been kind of compromised with lack or quality of drivers - resulting in poor overall performance. E.g.: no/poor/intermittend wifi/BT, excessive battery drain, loud fans.
Bdiem··on Show HN: A Simple Highway Simulator
These settings left me with a neverending accident on one lane.
Bdiem··on A Model Railway Journey
And / Or consider booking a guided behind-the-scnes tour. http://www.miniatur-wunderland.com/visit/guidance/60-min/

Try to get in early or / late on a week day - especially if you like to let your eyes / imaganitaion wander around uninterupted. Otherwise it gets somewhat crowded despite the fact that their limiting / scheduling aproach.

Bdiem··on Russian ship loitering near undersea cables
Is that a realistic threat model? What does the technology look like to tap into 800Gbit/s of fiber traffic - under water?
Bdiem··on Pilots, air traffic controllers shifting to text messaging
It is more the necessity of working around frequency congestion and all those other voice via radio related problems eg ("to","two","victor","vector",unameit) than a convenience change of a good working system.

Great read about that "my stetement is meant as a question" topic in the AVWeb Series "Say again". It boils down to "inflection does not work (well) via radio, add 'request' as prefix to your request".

Bdiem··on Pilots, air traffic controllers shifting to text messaging
Defacto it is, but spoken with many a accent. Try listening to some for yourself to get a feel for it - http://www.liveatc.net/
Bdiem··on Pilots, air traffic controllers shifting to text messaging
It also has to do something with radio (voice) frequencies beeing at max capacity in high traffic areas.
Bdiem··on Pilots, air traffic controllers shifting to text messaging
It's a (underfunded) government industry - change often takes a lot of time in big companys, especially with their high demand to security and procedures.

I'd like to recommend the AVWeb series "Say again" series by Don Brown. It gives some insight in the last decades of the airspace controlling government industry and it's problems.

Bdiem··on Ask HN: As an entry-level developer, what's expected of me on the first job?
The process of structuring and explaining a problem to yourself via email or as before mentioned as "something similar" is available as a service: http://duckie.me/#about_section

Related information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber_duck_debugging

This method helped me alot as I found myself explaning a problem to a colleague finding the solution through the indepth explanation, wasting both of our time and focus.

Bdiem··on Placebo Button
So, what did I want the button to do? I tried the following with success: "visual changes on press then revert to original state"
Bdiem··on Ask HN: Which SciFi novel(s) would you want made into a TV series?
Tuf Voyaging by G.R.R. Martin

Gray-Death-Trilogy by William H. Keith, Jr. (Subset of the Battletech Series)

Bdiem··on Solar Impulse Live – Around The World In a Solar Powered Plane

Bdiem··on A professional mapping drone
Sounds perfect for a fun day at the beach, right? Not so fast … its $12,000 price tag makes it more suitable for more serious endeavors, such as surveying and mining.

Bdiem··on Elevator Saga – An elevator programming game
I'm not a developer of the game but:

DestinationQueue handling: It is not redundant, those are different options. Just to give an valid example: Add something to the queue, sort the queue, make the elevator run the updated and sorted queue.

Having both goingUpIndicator and goingDownIndicator is probabaly necessary to get this abritrary third state (both enabled / both disabled) which essentially indicates that the elevator will go in both directions.

Bdiem··on Ask HN: What book changed your life in 2014?
"Lord of the Rings" by Tolkien. Tried to read it for years, but always got distracted by other books (e.g. "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" by Richard Rhodes - found in a HN). Lo! This year, after I purchased a e-book version I finally concluded the quest and cast the ... I mean I read it.
