BiteCode_dev··on Switching from Pyenv to Uv
That's one of the bonus I was thinking about. It's nice if you have a subset of deps you want to share, or if one dep is actually part of the monorepo, but it does require more to know.
BiteCode_dev··on Switching from Pyenv to Uv
If the libraries are meant to be used together, you can get away with one venv. If they should be decoupled, then one venv per lib is better.

There is not much to know:

- uv python install <version> if you want a particular version of python to be installed

- uv init --vcs none [--python <version>] in each directory to initialize the python project

- uv add [--dev] to add libraries to your venv

- uv run <cmd> when you want to run a command in the venv

That's it, really. Any bonus can be learned later.

BiteCode_dev··on Peer-to-peer file transfers in the browser
I miss dukto r5.
BiteCode_dev··on Peer-to-peer file transfers in the browser
https://wormhole.app/ has been spared and is pretty good. Encrypted, dl can start before up is finished, decent size limit.

Unrelated to the wormhole python cli tool and associated file sharing protocol.

BiteCode_dev··on What made the Irish famine so deadly
Indeed, he didn't commit genocide, but his wars ended up killing 3.5 to 6 millions people, a staggering amount for the time.

Given that those deaths were basically because of his lust for territorial extension and disregard for human life, I would say we are in a similar ballpark as Mao, Hitler, Stalin, etc.

Of course, our history books are quick to state he made reforms, particularly legal and administrative ones, that benefitted our country a lot and still echo benefits today.

But again, I think if you a responsible for millions of deaths because of your desire for conquest, any arguments you can make in the other way are instantly moot.

You may, however, made the argument that it would have been better to be a French citizen at the time than somewhere else, depending on where and how you were born. But it's a different point.

BiteCode_dev··on What made the Irish famine so deadly
In France there are mentions of the colonies, slavery, and ensuing wars. And you study napoleon of course.

But there is never a critic of it, it's mentioned as matter of fact for the first, and only in positive for the second.

I had to grow old to realize "wait, napoleon was basically our hitler...".

BiteCode_dev··on Optimal brain process requires balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurons
One of my friends is a doctornspecialist in treating musicians. He told le once it is a well known phenomenon, and worst, if you practice too much without rest, you can damage your brain in a way that makes it difficult to progress later.
BiteCode_dev··on The DOJ still wants Google to sell off Chrome
Chrome had been on the biggest and most VIP billboard on the planet:

Nobody can get it except chrome.

BiteCode_dev··on StrictYAML
I hope one day we will all move to something like Cuelang.
BiteCode_dev··on How often are children genetically unrelated to their presumed fathers?
Some combinations are impossible.

E.G: both biological parents cannot be A and the kids be AB

BiteCode_dev··on How often are children genetically unrelated to their presumed fathers?
If it's not the father's choice, it's like stating raped women should always raise the kid.
BiteCode_dev··on How often are children genetically unrelated to their presumed fathers?
Same with blood types.

Clearly lots of people never listen in biology class.

BiteCode_dev··on How often are children genetically unrelated to their presumed fathers?
The selfish gene states quite well why this happens and is normal in the statistical sense.

I don't think a lot of people today would challenge dawkins on that.

BiteCode_dev··on A Map of Python
Yes it was a good tech from the user perspective.

If you could make it render fast enough, that is.

And twisted did make use cases possible in python that would have been near impossible otherwise.

If you could debug it, that is.

BiteCode_dev··on A Map of Python
My first job was with plone. I hated it. Then I learned the twisted ecosystem and had a moment of crisis.

Those are the devil pits of the python world.

Thank god for django and asyncio.

BiteCode_dev··on Show HN: Robyn – “Batman Inspired” Python Web Framework Built with Rust
Why do all those micro framework copy the worst aspects of flask?

The global request object, the bad integration with sqlalchemy, the strong coupling with an application object that forced the indirection of blueprints...

If you start again from scratch, forcing people to migrate their stack and therefor leave their ecosystem behind, at least fix the glaring API problems.

BiteCode_dev··on Microsoft is killing Skype
And the amazing algo that made skype work as a P2P system with very little bandwidth circa 2000 is now lost. Locked down in Microsoft's proprietary attic gathering dust while each conf app gets worse as the time goes by.
BiteCode_dev··on Fish 4
The better syntax used to be a selling point, but now with AI being able to generate any trivial one-liner and minor scripts you need on a day-to-day basics, have a bad syntax would only affect bigger projects, which I would not write in Fish shell anyway.

It's a hard sell.

BiteCode_dev··on Electronic devices used for car thefts set to be banned
Like power tools ?

They make opening a locked doors very easy.

Or regular non ray guns ? They make killing super easy. And you definitly don't need those for most people.

But oil as well, I mean it makes arson so easy and you can burn entire houses with people inside.

BiteCode_dev··on Electronic devices used for car thefts set to be banned
Then you should outlaw knife, all cleaning chemical, hammers, amateur radio...

But not guns. They are fine.

BiteCode_dev··on Electronic devices used for car thefts set to be banned
Ah, those law abiding thieves will surely stop procuring themselves those devices now that they are illegal.
BiteCode_dev··on It is no longer safe to move our governments and societies to US clouds
That was such a low blow, given we have stellar companies like OVH that have demonstrated their skills and willingness to bring great hosting, and are fully local.
BiteCode_dev··on In Defense of Text Labels
Back arrow, reload sign, house for the home button (all them on most web browsers), +/- signs, trash can to delete, music notes, thumbs up and down, movie clap, compas for navigation, "?" for help, clock for time, lockpad for secured, git wrap for free, speaker for volume, bell for notification, battery, pen to edit, calendar for date, clipboard to copy/past, gear for settings, yellow triangle for warning, red circle carrying an icon for forbidden, check mark for approved...

We are literally living in the era of emoji and there is one for every single one up there. Teens can have all conversations without using words.

It happens because the more we use symbols, the more we attach and spread meaning.

Send "lesser than three" to someone 30 years ago, you'll get a blank reaction.

Send "<3" today, and it's a different game.
