BiteCode_dev··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
But if they were, they would never have become what they are in the first place, including the good things.

States are neither good at innovation nor dynamism.

But they are very good at telling you what you should and should not do.

The latter part has some wonderful consequences for consumer or worker protections, but it has some terrible ones for creating new stuff or improving the old.

BiteCode_dev··on John Carmack's arguments against building a custom XR OS at Meta
The only reason you want me to "cool off", is because you feel bad just interacting with somebody expressing a polite, strong opinion. Online. On the other side of the world. With text.

This is exactly the madness I'm talking about.

Case in point.

BiteCode_dev··on John Carmack's arguments against building a custom XR OS at Meta
Having worked in the valley, I've seen what critical feedback meant in many companies there, and it removes all usefulness of the info because there is a ceiling of what is socially acceptable to say; therefore, you can't know how bad or urgent things are.

Everything is ASAP. They are super excited about everything. And nothing you do is wrong, it just could be improved or they like it but don't love it.

You don't know if something is important, basically.

Just like Louis CK said, "if you used 'amazing' on chicken nuggets, what are you going to say when your first child is born?". But in reverse.

Personally, I'd rather work with someone who would tell me my work is terrible if it is.

In Germany, you can't even legally say somebody did a bad job at your company in a recommendation letter. Companies created a whole subtext to workaround that, it's crazy.

Some things are just bad. You should be able to say it is. Not by saying it could be better. Not by using euphemism. It's just something that needs to go to the trash.

In fact, I don't trust people who can't receive this information, even if not packaged with tact (which you should attempt to, but life happens). If you can't handle people not being perfectly polite every time, I can't help but feel I won't be able to count on you when things get hard.

That must be the French in me talking.

> they also got me reported to HR by the manager of the XROS effort for supposedly making his team members feel bad

This is madness. The safe space culture has really gone too far.

BiteCode_dev··on Anything can be a message queue if you use it wrongly enough (2023)
In this case, you would need to pay someone anyway. I never heard about an AWS account that didn't require at least one engineer in charge of it.
BiteCode_dev··on Anything can be a message queue if you use it wrongly enough (2023)
This is not a situation where you have zero alternatives. You have ton of cheap hosting out there. Most people using AWS don't need the level of reliability and scaling it provides, they pay the price for nothing.

BiteCode_dev··on Rv, a new kind of Ruby management tool
uv uses very agressive caching (https://docs.astral.sh/uv/concepts/cache/) but pytorch has many, many different combinations of packages for the same release.

It's not uncommon to have to download pytorch many times, because some lib may specify one slightly different version than another: https://docs.astral.sh/uv/guides/integration/pytorch/#config...

pytorch causes many headaches in the ecosystem, and a better handling of it is one thing their commercial offering, pyx, wants to fix: https://astral.sh/blog/introducing-pyx

BiteCode_dev··on Rv, a new kind of Ruby management tool
uv doesn't redownload every dep every time. If the dep is the same, it uses a hardlink: no additional download, no additional space taken.

Pip subcommands are here to ease the transition from the old ecosystem to the new.

BiteCode_dev··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
Millenials here. We did. A lot of a lot. And nobody cared.

Even today on HN most use chrome instead of firefox and mac instead of linux and. If you can't even convince the biggest nerds that supporting alternatives is important, what chances do you have?

BiteCode_dev··on Standard Thermal: Energy Storage 500x Cheaper Than Batteries
I always wondered if, instead of using solar panels in the deserts, we could use very long and black pipes running water, heated by the sun. Then the heat is moved to the ground for storage, and once there is enough heat, we use a turbine to generate electricity.
BiteCode_dev··on Turning Claude Code into my best design partner
Projects using AI are the best documented and tested projects I worked on.

They are well documented because you need context for the LLM to be performant. And they are well tested because the cost of producing test got lower since they can be half generated, while the benefit of having tests got higher, since they are guard rails for the machine.

People constantly say code quality is going to plummet because of those tools, but I think the exact opposite is going to happen.

BiteCode_dev··on An Unusual Way to End Up with a Whole Lot of Gold
If I recall, one recator would produce something like 0.2% of the annual gold unearthed every year.

Also, can't be used immediately: there is a 16 years period before radioactivity comes down to a safe level.

So I'd say it can be introduced smoothly, and make the endeavor of of a reactor more lucrative while not destroying gold market.

BiteCode_dev··on Emailing a one-time code is worse than passwords
Yep, back to passwords, but less secure ones.
BiteCode_dev··on You can now uv run a GitHub gist
This is what the code does more or less.
BiteCode_dev··on You can now uv run a GitHub gist
This has been attempted many times with python, and always been a failure because of the dynamism of the language, even by big actors.

The solution, therefor, as always been to use the OS tooling for that. Even the .Net ecosystem eventually went into that direction.

The JS ecosystem is making that mistake right now, and will of course, deprecate this API in 10 years after they realize they can't make it secure either unless they basically reimplement BSD jails entirely.

BiteCode_dev··on You can now uv run a GitHub gist
uv run is using virtual envs, that's the de facto standard, and those are sandboxes for python deps. So it already is.

Plus inline deps mean you can pin python versions and 3rd party modules using pyproject.toml syntax in a comment of your script. This is not perfect locking, as it doesn't pin sub dependencies, but it's already more that any other tool out there.

If you want perfect locking, create a project, and use uv lock. You are already in a different category of code.

BiteCode_dev··on You can now uv run a GitHub gist
You know how you can "uv run" python code from a text file using just a URL?

No? Well, you can:

uv run https://pastebin.com/raw/RrEWSA5F

And since yesterday, you can even run a github gist:

uv run https://gist.github.com/charliermarsh/ea9eab7f56b1b3d41e5196...

BiteCode_dev··on PHP 8.5 adds pipe operator
It's lovely to see how PHP keeps growing. It's far from what it was when I used to code with it in V3. I really thought it would be lost in its bad design, but the core devs kept at it, and it is, indeed, a pretty decent language now.

BiteCode_dev··on The Rule of Law Is Dead in the US
After 2001 the US lost the habeas corpus in total silence. The Snowden revelations demonstrated that you can have a stage level conspiracy unveiled, and again nothing Will happen.

The writing has been on the wall for 2 decades: laws don't matter there.

BiteCode_dev··on Attention is your scarcest resource (2020)
HN has been cheering for those types of people for as long as I have been here. Musk seldom even sees his 10 kids, except one. Jobs just decided that raising his daughter was not his problem.
BiteCode_dev··on Sleep all comes down to the mitochondria
My sleep gets worse when I take creatine, so maybe it doesn't improve sleep, but rather helps mitochondria to get by without sleep?
BiteCode_dev··on Sleep all comes down to the mitochondria
I'm obese, have sleep apnea, and can't find any statement that I would consider lacking tact in OP's comments.

Yours on the other hand, I find plenty.

BiteCode_dev··on EU age verification app to ban any Android system not licensed by Google
That's the whole idea about this thread: you don't want the power that be to know more than it should.

And the current legal setup mean you would have to own a google account, a terrible private life setup.

BiteCode_dev··on EU age verification app to ban any Android system not licensed by Google
That's the whole point of this thread, the current setup makes a google account mandatory, with all the terrible consequences on private life that it has.

It should not.
