Boltgolt··on The cryptography behind e-voting (and why paper ballots are still essential)
"there are never fewer than 4 eyes on the ballot box" doesn't seem too complex to me
Boltgolt··on Cuba is skipping its November 1, 2026 clock change and staying on DST until 2027
If you read the article it's the worst of both worlds: Keep clock time the same but start work and school 30 minutes later?
Boltgolt··on Cuba is skipping its November 1, 2026 clock change and staying on DST until 2027
Calling canceling a time change mere days before it was going to happen "the voice of reason" is rich
Boltgolt··on What Should a VAT Calculation Record Contain?
This is a very thinly veiled ad
Boltgolt··on I gave four coding agents $100 budget to build a PDF editor
I think the biggest difference is how the feedback loop used to work when hand coding. The pdf colors being inverted in dark mode is a bug i could see myself accidentally create, but i would've seen that immediately when testing if dark mode works at all
Boltgolt··on SynthID Detector
> This has got nothing to do with protecting any users, or public.

I don't see another good reason why the EU would force them to do this

Boltgolt··on Our approach to EU text provenance rules
> And of course, cookies are no longer needed for invasive tracking, fingerprinting, and data disaggregation. Been this for years. But hey, bureaucracies never backtrack, so we will have the cookie consent until the thermal death of the universe.

The exact method of tracking doesn't matter. Under GDPR you have to ask for consent no matter the technology used. So as long as tracking every single movement remains the norm, we will have consent banners

Boltgolt··on Denmark data breach exposes 8.8M people's personal data
You do have to request them and the person you requested them for will know you did so
Boltgolt··on Scientists solve 1840s space weather mystery
Why would anyone pay for these tokens?
Boltgolt··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
I wish to have the confidence of an American opinion on anything that's different than the US. Studies show that resocialization works and has worked for decades without a sign of "learning it the hard way" in sight
Boltgolt··on Text AI watermarks will always be trivial to remove
> I feel like this is going to end up being like cookie laws

Companies will implement it in the worst way possible? Nowhere in the cookie laws does it say you need to add a banner, you just can't spy on users without their consent.

Boltgolt··on BYOC Anywhere: The Spectrum of Bring Your Own Cloud Deployments
BOYD is corporate to me, BYOC LANs were common here
Boltgolt··on Turning a dumb AC unit smart (without losing my security deposit)
Updates? To an ESPHome device?
Boltgolt··on European digital ID wallets rely on safety services of Google and Apple
I heard this one a lot 6+ years ago
Boltgolt··on A few interesting modern pixel fonts
> Geist Pixel isn’t a novelty font. It’s a system extension.

Okay LLM

Boltgolt··on Building a SaaS in 2026 Using Only EU Infrastructure
> So many tech writers seemed to suddenly decide this was a possibility at the same time

Wonder if any large geopolitical rifts happened eh. I soul would not host my application in Russia either for instance

Boltgolt··on European alternatives to Google, Apple, Dropbox and 120 US apps
For a specific group of people in the world anything but "USA nr1" is hard to image, I understand. Can the nuanced take be: Europe does it better sometimes? Not the best slogan but you're not in marketing
Boltgolt··on A most elegant TCP hole punching algorithm
We can all run this through our LLM if choice, why post this?
Boltgolt··on 221 Cannon is Not For Sale
When there was only a single terminal it was common in Europe to just... walk to the counter and pay for the meal card in hand. No other way to type in your PIN
Boltgolt··on From stealth blackout to whitelisting: Inside the Iranian shutdown
Sometimes you start reading comments like this being like "interesting viewpoint", but then somehow Russia deciding to invade a foreign country is the fault of the west and you're like "ah it's a Russian troll"
Boltgolt··on New Safari developer tools provide insight into CSS Grid Lanes
This is like being in the 2000s and saying "Why would I use anything but IE5, everything works with it"

The market share is what makes those circumstances exceptionally rare. Meanwhile we're having to use safari specific fixes and refrain from using he newest standards just because of safari

Boltgolt··on I Accidentally Finished a Filesystem
"No X, no X, no X, just Y"
Boltgolt··on Fixing a Buffer Overflow in Unix v4 Like It's 1973

Boltgolt··on A prediction market user made $436k betting on Maduro's downfall
...only to find out they invaded the wrong country! (Nobel peace prizes are awarded in Oslo)
Boltgolt··on Total monthly number of StackOverflow questions over time
I don't know how others use LLMs, but once I find the answer to something I'm stuck on I do not tell the LLM that it's fixed. This was a problem in forums as well but I think even fewer people are going to give that feedback to a chatbot
Boltgolt··on Starlink satellite fails, polluting orbit with debris and falling toward Earth
Kessler Syndrome mentioned in the first line? With the air resistance at 400km that seems unlikely
Boltgolt··on New layouts with CSS Subgrid
A table is a grid, but a grid does not have to be a table
Boltgolt··on Zohran Mamdani wins the New York mayoral race
This is what working in a toxic working culture does to a person. "Because I only have one week of PTO a year and have to be constantly add afraid of being fired, everyone should be!"
