Brushfire··on Telegram's t.me domain has been suspended
insanity. it almost undercuts everything they do.
Brushfire··on Private equity bought America's essential services
Why is there so much attention paid to the buyer (private equity) and no attention paid to the folks who sold the businesses to them?
Brushfire··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
There is this weird thing in venture investing:

the line between "crazy, brilliant founders who will build world changing companies" and "crazy, lunatic founders who will lie and cheat and be awful" is very hard to distinguish, especially at the series seed/series A level.

It can lead to false positives and false negatives all the time.

Brushfire··on Ask HN: A check from PayPal to me was stolen and cashed. What can I do?
I'd suggest you file a claim in small business court. It will get resolved very quickly.
Brushfire··on Childhoods of Exceptional People
I think that’s a great point, and I don’t disagree with it. (Although I don’t particularly care about being “interesting” as a value). My point was more that as a parent I want to be responsive to my children instead of deterministic. I want them to find their path, not me to find it for them by declaring that they will be exceptional. My love is not conditional on their outcome of becoming exceptional, and further, an ultimately fulfilling life doesn’t require that either, nor should we teach that it does.
Brushfire··on Childhoods of Exceptional People
We often worry about how to make our children exceptional, but I wonder of the people studied here, how many were genuinely happy? Shouldn’t we want our children to be happy more than we want them to be exceptional? The two aren’t mutually exclusive of course, but the pursuit of exceptionalism might lead to a less happy life, especially if that exceptionalism doesn’t materialize. I know far too many people pushed incredibly hard by their family/circumstances and burned out fast.
Brushfire··on Who knew the first AI battles would be fought by artists?
Imagine you are a startup business owner and you have developed a unique product or service.

And then someone comes along and competes with you?

No one is bothered by competition in markets.

Why do we have more or less empathy of this type for some professions?

Brushfire··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2022)

Brushfire··on Will low and no code tools ever truly disrupt tech development?
Lol, this whole discussion is like a bunch of architects talking about how folks shouldn't do DIY projects on their own, and yet... DIY is a huge thing because most people are actually reasonably intelligent and capable of doing things on their own.

Brushfire··on Launching no-code algorithmic trading platform
How does one sign up to get access?
Brushfire··on You can't download this image
Downloading the image worked just fine on an iPad. So not sure what they are talking about.
Brushfire··on Enterprise-level Chromium removes view-source to prevent students from cheating
Why is it acceptable to have a quiz where the answers are obvious from the HTML? Come on…
Brushfire··on TaleSpire is a beautiful way to play pen and paper RPGs online
Fantasy Grounds is where it’s at: the system actually understand the rules of the system. Everything else you spend hours doing manual rote stuff instead of playing the game instead of having fun.

Brushfire··on Launch HN: Awesomic (YC S21) – Get design tasks done with 24-hour turnaround
Congrats guys, exciting! How do you differentiate yourselves from other on-demand design services?
Brushfire··on Goodbye YC
THANK YOU AARON!
Brushfire··on EU to unveil landmark law curbing power of tech giants
They don’t own:

- Bumble

- Badoo

- Eharmony

- Zoosk

- ChrstianMingle

- JDate

- tons of international and niche sites and apps

- many, many others

The idea that there is monopoly power being leveraged here to prevent other dating sites from being started and grown and be successful has very little evidence behind it.

Brushfire··on Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued (2012)
This is all generally very good advice but I’m equally amused at the ridiculous portrayal of “businessmen” throughout this post; most people do not see themselves this way and it’s sort of goofy to think they do. But that isn’t terribly important to the message.

Oh, and one other thing, if you’re at a 10-person ish startup, definitely don’t act like a company that is 1000ish. You’ll lose. And so your hiring practices should generally not align with what is outlined here.

Brushfire··on Be skeptical of Ring's indoor security drone
How would my cameras be used against me? Pragmatically, not theoretically.
Brushfire··on No Hello (2013)
I totally agree with the sentiment represented here but thinking linking someone to this is a bad way to handle the situation with others. I think it’s best handled by asking them after they make one of these requests and they get their answer. Linking to external sites feels passive aggressive to most people who are just trying to be nice.

Brushfire··on How to Run a Live Coding Stream on Twitch Using OBS
A much easier option would be to use Lightstream. https://golightstream.com.
Brushfire··on Dealing with Insomnia
I’ve struggled with insomnia my whole adult life and I can tell you the three factors that have helped the most are, in order:

- removing caffeine completely

- getting enough direct sunlight (hours per day)

- losing weight

Everything else (melatonin, blue light, exercise, sleepy tea, other drugs, etc) never helped or made my quality of life worse.

Brushfire··on YC W20 Online-Only Demo Day
We found it very useful.
Brushfire··on Attorney General will ask Zuckerberg to halt plans for end-to-end encryption
If they don't do E2E, users will abandon Facebook for platforms that do support it (and already are). And they aren't doing this to commit crimes, but to prevent advertisements from targeting every conversation they've ever had.
Brushfire··on Uber proposes policy that would pay drivers a minimum wage of $21 per hour
Minimum wage policies in this sector are such a boon to self driving car companies. It will accelerate the end of uber and lyft using human drivers dramatically. I hope these unions realize what they're doing.
Brushfire··on Yield curve is blaring loudest recession warning since 2007
Move into cash, so you're ready when the market drops.
Brushfire··on What is the role of meat in a healthy diet?
Yes. And do. And so do millions of people. The market is there, but the mechanism is not -- because to trust that the animals are not abused, you must know about the farm, which breaks traditional supply chains where a chicken is a chicken.

I've often wondered if a single-source brand could arise where they simply print a QR code on the package that would let you track the meat from its source and review living conditions (video, photos, etc). Its just a matter of historical record, so its feasible if you're willing to install the technology in the farm. There are independent auditors to assess farm quality for organic, etc -- why not also employ them for cruelty practices.
