BurningPenguin··on ProgramBench: Can Language Models Rebuild Programs from Scratch?
Kinda surprising to me, since i had some trouble with Cursor & Co. once the file went over ~800 lines. It repeatedly failed to edit it, until i split it up into multiple logical components. As it should have been from the beginning...

Though, it was some time ago, so things might have improved?

BurningPenguin··on EU offered 'zero-for-zero' deal to US weeks before tariff announcement
The US also depends on several bases in Europe and other countries. If the decision is made to close them, they're going to have a harder time projecting all that power. I may not be a military expert, but i'm guessing that would also influence operations in the Houthis region.
BurningPenguin··on Far-right populists much more likely than the left to spread fake news – study
Seems to hit a nerve.
BurningPenguin··on Htmx and Web Components: A Perfect Match
I think it's also possible in Stimulus, if i'm not mistaken. Because i kinda prefer that one.
BurningPenguin··on 'Sunspot archipelago' 15 times wider than Earth could soon bombard us
> Might provide a proverbial cold shower for climate scientists.

Why?

BurningPenguin··on BMW Ends Combustion Engine Production in Germany
Pretty sure those don't run on electricity.
BurningPenguin··on HTML Web Components: An Example
Backticks are used for certain letters in several European languages. à, ì, ù, ò. Depending on the editor, it's kinda annoying. Normal quotes or double quotes usually don't do that. Also, the key is right beside the backspace key, which feels kinda far away for my hands (which of course also depends on the keyboard).
BurningPenguin··on HTML Web Components: An Example
Yes. But to me it feels far away compared to the quotes. And depending on the editor, it may end up above a letter if you forget to press space. For example "à". It can be a bit annoying.
BurningPenguin··on HTML Web Components: An Example
I'll never understand why JS decided to use backticks. It's so weird to type on German keyboard.
BurningPenguin··on De-crufted Windows 11 coming to Europe soon
Dude, we don't live in the middle ages. We have a tech sector. ASML, SAP, Infineon, Nokia, Dassault Systèmes and so on.
BurningPenguin··on Desalination system could produce freshwater that is cheaper than tap water
I grew up in a city that was once an important part of the salt trade routes to Bohemia. These routes were called "Goldener Steig" (golden path), and salt was considered "white gold". Entire wars were fought for salt. And now it's so abundant, that we're sitting on mountains of it, not knowing what to do with it. Thinking about that feels kinda unreal.
BurningPenguin··on I digitalized Berlin's registration form
Maybe in the North, but in Bavaria it's the "good buddy" scenario.
BurningPenguin··on I got paid to live in Antarctica
I guess you and i have a very different understanding of the word "complaint". Because i don't see any.
BurningPenguin··on I got paid to live in Antarctica
Did you guys actually read that article, or only the pretty colorful boxes? Because the text right before that fancy box explains why that phrase came into existence.
BurningPenguin··on Ask HN: How to handle Asian-style “Family name first” when designing interfaces?
I'd say it depends on the area and the type of business. In Lower Bavaria it's quite common to use informal language even with strangers. Any mechanic, plumber or other craftsmen will use "Du" the moment they see you. Formal language is usually used in a more formal environment, like banks or maybe some fancy restaurant or fancy shop.
BurningPenguin··on Germany Is Losing Its Mojo. Finding It Again Won’t Be Easy
Nope. The Greens are the first to give up their ideology to come to an agreement with other parties. It's called "Realpolitik". They were also the ones who warned against increasing dependency to Russia, but were ignored when CDU was in power. You know, the conservative party, that sat on their asses for 16 years doing almost nothing in terms of renewable...

> who think that somehow wind turbines and solar panels are made out of thin air and don't pollute.

Nobody thinks that.

BurningPenguin··on Orb is a free and open source web desktop
Is it really being reset every few minutes? Because those open text editors seem quite... "interesting".
BurningPenguin··on Ask HN: How to navigate the world as a brain-damaged 17 year old?
Do not use supplements without checking it with your doctor.
BurningPenguin··on Russia claims use of new tactic of remotely detonated tank laden with explosives
I'm no tactician, but that doesn't sound like a very intelligent strategy...
BurningPenguin··on Opinion: Geoengineering Is Shockingly Inexpensive
Yes, but many manufacturers didn't particularly care about that. Especially not those in my country. Without pressure from the people and the following laws that were implemented by the government, BMW & Co. would still be happily developing new ICEs.

Also, the most ideal solution in my book would be to do less work, not more. Geoengineering requires quite a lot of work on a permanent basis.

BurningPenguin··on Opinion: Geoengineering Is Shockingly Inexpensive
Idk, maybe indirectly due to wear and tear or whatever. What i'm trying to say, though, is that the dependency on oil should be reduced in general. Nobody needs tupperware to last for centuries. That might also be the point of most environmentalists.
BurningPenguin··on Opinion: Geoengineering Is Shockingly Inexpensive
It would be nice to live in a city and not be bothered with the smell, noise and health risks of thousands of engines. It would also be nice if our environment wouldn't be plastered with microplastics.
BurningPenguin··on Inside the Wuhan lab weeks before Covid
These nutjobs were all over Twitter, Facebook & Co. Usually platforms that reward engagement with more visibility. The people who were pushing this narrative were relying heavily on a mix of gullible people, fake accounts and bots. Many accounts being merely a few weeks or up to a month old. This is essentially the reason i left Twitter in the first place. I'm observing the conspiracy milieu for over 10 years now. This tactic isn't new, they already used this in 2009 to push comments on certain websites to their side. Back then, it was mostly manual work. Also, thanks to social media, they don't need help from trashy news agencies to be seen.
BurningPenguin··on Inside the Wuhan lab weeks before Covid
Not from the US, but i don't see how it was ever a "taboo". The general gist was "we don't know" or "unlikely". However, what i did see on Social Media, was a bunch of nutjobs pushing their nonsense about "deep state", "population control" and so on.

Stretching it a little bit, but: "Ultima" from Stephen Baxter. But you should read "Proxima" first to understand the context.
BurningPenguin··on Report from the German Parliament's “Sustainable by Design” Conference
It is artificially held down by their government.
BurningPenguin··on Report from the German Parliament's “Sustainable by Design” Conference
That looks more like a somewhat recent thing. There is the Ademe study, which showed that renewable would be a good idea for France. Which was swept under the table, because it didn't fit Macrons idea of going full speed nuclear.

https://www.reuters.com/article/france-nuclearpower-idUSL8N1...

Maybe having a sizeable renewable fleet would have helped to avoid much of the problems France has now. But i guess they also had a government playing that back and forth game...

There was also a lot going on there: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power_in_France#Histor...

So, putting all blame on Germany alone doesn't really fit the history. Oh, and we're also net exporter of energy for many years now: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1331853/electricity-impo...

BurningPenguin··on Report from the German Parliament's “Sustainable by Design” Conference
Yeah, i forgot to replace the fuel rod in my gas heater. Just give me a second.
