CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Tesla is recalling its cheaper Cybertruck because the wheels might fall off
[flagged]
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on You are not your job
Nobody needs private school, give me a fucking break.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on The Brand Age
Thank you for missing the point of the essay.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on The Brand Age
I care about as much for the brands' movements as my own.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on The US is flirting with its first-ever population decline
I agree with you but I don't really see what the alternative is. If you openly go around stating that you regret having children, what are people supposed to say? It's better to keep those thoughts to yourself because there, quite frankly, is nothing helpful anyone could say even if they wanted to. Not to mention that it would be unfair to the kids if they got the feeling that you regret having them.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Calorie Restriction Attenuates Aging Signatures in White Matter Oligodendrocytes
I didn't read the whole article, but what does a lifelong 30% calorie restriction mean in practice?
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Shut-In Society
It's really cool seeing how people connected with strangers from all over the place before the Internet. Also makes me wonder how many interesting uses of real estate like Home and Garden there are today in populated areas (34th st in Manhattan, etc.).
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Warren Buffett's final shareholder letter [pdf]
What a genuine, thoughtful, and down-to-earth person. I'm going to miss his annual letters.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on The Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum
Virtual museum gives 404
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on How frequently do vulnerabilites affect TLS on Android?
My device is not locked and I don't have a Samsung account, but I generally agree with your assessment of the risk profiles of those activities.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Finding a former Australian prime minister’s passport number on Instagram (2020)
Who asked?
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on 'It was so unreal': Norwegian man wakes to cargo ship in his garden
If I didn't trust the Guardian I would dismiss the photos as AI-generated. Even then I find this sort of thing difficult to believe . . . glad there were no injuries at least.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Mathematician solves algebra's oldest problem using intriguing number sequences
Interesting, but I wish they went deeper into the geodes and how it all actually works. ACM might do a more technical writeup.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Elizabeth Holmes' partner raises millions for new biotech testing startup
Should've gotten the death penalty.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Show HN: Learn where countries are on the world map with Spaced Repetition
I hardly ever comment but I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed learning like this. Apart from the UI challenges on mobile Android (already noted by others), I wish it would cycle between more countries sooner (I kept getting Albania and Myanmar even after getting them right many times).
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Cuttle – a MTG like game using a standard 52 card deck
It looks interesting, but I always struggle to explain (and conversely when on the other side, to understand) the rules of card games to new players. Has anyone had success in bringing a game more complicated than Cards Against Humanity to their friend group? What did you find helpful?
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on How the Samuel Smith beer baron built Britain's strangest pub chain
Wow, he's so much more eccentric than I imagined, like a real-life Scrooge.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Rosenworcel Shares Mobile Carrier Responses to Data Privacy Probe (2022)
I thought the probe and subsequent responses were interesting insofar as they demonstrate carriers' handling of user location data and Call Detail Records.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Show HN: 2048 turned 10 this year, I built an updated version to celebrate
This is still the only mobile game I play (besides chess, if that counts). Thanks for creating such a fun piece of software. It's snappy, beautiful, and tastefully done.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on The global surveillance free-for-all in mobile ad data
I know it goes beyond cell phones, but as someone who agrees with you and has the means and know-how, I find opting out through personal choice impossible. If you don't carry a cell phone, how do your loved ones reach you in an emergency? etc., so the only real way to win is through regulation. And the laws and enforcement won't change anytime soon for the reasons you mention. Super frustrating.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on US weighs Google break-up in landmark antitrust case
I completely agree. These discussions are so frustrating because the "ads are evil!" people never acknowledge that they're consuming ad-supported content. "If you don't like ads, stop watching YouTube, or pay for the ad-free version" just gets met with "well they show ads even on the paid version", totally sidestepping the point with BS.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on DiyPresso: DIY Espresso Machine
I recently bought a super automatic machine for only $350, and it doesn't include a steam wand (big plus for someone who never makes milk-based drinks). This seems like a fun project but simple off-the-shelf ones are really coming down in price.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Americans are doing less DIY. It's another worrying sign for the economy
This. I want to (and sometimes try) to fix more things myself, but web search is so full of SEO garbage that I dread trawling through the results. I think part of the solution is similar to what I did for cooking: lean on a couple of high-quality sites and older printed books.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Our Founder – Momofuku Ando
That was awesome, especially the bit about the Asama-Sansō incident. Also made me instantly want some noodles . . . .
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Data brokers sell our location data and jeopardise national security
The tools are absolutely not there, and even if they were available you can't expect ordinary citizens to know they exist or how to use them. This is a legal and civil liberties problem more so than a technological one.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Three years in North Korea as a foreigner (2021)
I can't tell if this comment was AI-generated.
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS: Noble Numbat
I've been on 20.04 LTS at home for years, is there any real reason to upgrade?
CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Old London Bridge
> The 19th-century London Bridge (famously referred to in TS Eliot’s The Waste Land) survived for little more than a century before it in turn was replaced, in the 1970s, by the present bridge. The 19th-century bridge was sold and re-erected in Arizona.

Wait, so someone literally got sold a bridge?

CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Jobs you're applying to might not be real

CAPSLOCKSSTUCK··on Ask HN: Which Wireless Carriers Protect Against SIM Swapping & Port-Out Attacks?
I appreciate the responses. I'll probably go with Ting, but Efani is also interesting.

By the way, for anyone in my situation who wants to stay with Fi but not be signed in to a Google Account on their device, https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleFi/comments/xzqd6v/what_does_... may be interesting.
